Drew Romo sent to the minors

Romo’s home run was his sixth of the year. He hit a solo shot off Rhett Lowder in the third inning. Romo’s home run was his first since May 25 against the Twins. Maybe he’ll continue to tap into some of his early-season power while Kyle Teel (ankle) is out, but Romo’s .136 average makes him unusable in fantasy.

Venable classified it as a broad range, but it sounds like Teel will be out until at least early September and there’s a possibility he’s done for the remainder of the regular season. The 24-year-old backstop was diagnosed with a high ankle sprain after suffering the injury on a play at home plate during Monday’s game against the Rangers. It’ll be Drew Romo and Edgar Quero handling the catching duties in his absence. It would probably make sense for Chicago to pursue a temporary veteran stopgap at the trade deadline based on this latest development.

It’s the third leg injury that Teel has suffered this year, joining the hamstring strain he sustained in the World Baseball Classic and the knee injury that came about while on a rehab assignment in May. He’d hit .190/.271/.317 in 19 games since returning in June. Drew Romo and Edgar Quero will resume sharing the catcher role in Chicago.

Teel was replaced by Drew Romo behind the dish after needing assistance to leave the field following a play at the plate in the second inning. It’s a bit unclear what exactly happened because there wasn’t a collision, but Teel appeared to injure his left leg while stretching to attempt to tag out Ezequiel Duran on the play. There should be an additional update on his status shortly.

Teel started at catcher and went 0-for-4 out of the cleanup spot in his season debut at Rate Field on Monday night. The 24-year-old backstop missed nearly three months to open the season after suffering a serious hamstring injury during the World Baseball Classic back in March. His return was delayed even further by a knee sprain that he suffered during his rehabilitation process. It’s quickly turning into a bit of a lost season for Teel, who entered the year as one of the top young catchers in the game. Romo hit a two-run homer in the fourth, and a solo shot in the sixth. The former top catching prospect has his first two homers as a member of the White Sox, but he isn’t likely to hit much more as the backup backstop.

Romo gets the call to join Chicago’s active roster in a backup role with the club deciding to move on from veteran Reese McGuire. The 24-year-old catcher got into 19 games for the Rockies over the past two years, hitting .167 (9-for-54) during that span.

Catcher Drew Romo received the same news. For the time being, both players will remain in big league camp, though it’s possible they could eventually be cut loose if they would like to explore other opportunities. Kelenic, 26, has struggled at the dish this spring, hitting .179 (7-for-39) with a pair of homers, five RBI and two stolen bases.

Romo was designated for assignment last week, but cleared waivers and will be sent to Triple-A. The former catcher of the future for the Rockies has now been designated for assignment three times this offseason and will try to impress the White Sox in spring training so they decide to keep him around.
