Rays recalled OF Jacob Melton from Triple-A Durham; placed him on the 60-day injured list with a right hamstring injury.

It’s been mostly a lost year for Melton, a player the Rays were hoping would be their center fielder of the future when they gave up Brandon Lowe, Mason Montgomery and Jake Mangum to acquire he and Anderson Brito in last winter’s three-team trade with the Pirates and Astros. Melton ended up hitting .253/.346/.475 with 26 steals in 45 games for Durham in between injuries. He should get a chance to compete for a job in the spring, but considering that he’s never played more than 105 games in four full seasons since being drafted, he’s a little hard to trust at this point.
Should athletes time their family planning better?
After Mason Miller was unavailable for a crucial Padres NLDS game due to the birth of his child, Nick Wright and Dan Le Batard tap into an age-old debate: Should athletes be more careful about when they have children?

Melton suffered an ankle sprain at the end of April that sidelined him until June 11th. Since coming back, he has gone 13-for-25 (.520) with one home run, six RBI, three steals, and a 4/6 K/BB ratio. The Rays will be in no rush to promote him because, well, they’re the Rays, but he could push for at-bats this summer if he continues to get on base at even half this level.
  • TB Left Fielder #29
Melton suffered the injury earlier this week while rounding third base during Wednesday’s game for Triple-A Durham. The 25-year-old is viewed as Tampa Bay’s center fielder of the future after coming over in a trade with the Astros in the offseason. He has a chance to make his Rays debut at some point in the second half, especially if Cedric Mullins doesn’t get it going at the plate.
  • TB Left Fielder #29
Melton took an awkward step while rounding third base and was unable to walk off the field under his own power. We know that the trainers were examining his ankle/shin area, but we have no word yet on the severity of the injury. However, it does seem like this will keep him out for a bit of time. The 25-year-old was off to a solid start with a .346 on-base percentage and 16 steals in 19 games.
  • TB Left Fielder #29
The 25-year-old is slashing .238/.346/.444 in 19 games at Triple-A with one home run, a 31/12 K/BB ratio, and 16 steals. The strikeout rate is certainly too high, but Melton is getting on base a lot and taking plenty of extra bases when he does. The Rays have a crowded outfield, but Jake Fraley did leave Tuesday’s game with an injury, so there may be an opening coming. At least we know the Astros would like to have Melton as an option right now.
  • TB Shortstop #7
Williams and Melton are viewed as long-term building blocks up the middle for Tampa Bay. The pair of top prospects will open the season back in the upper minors with veterans Taylor Walls and Cedric Mullins starting at shortstop and center field, respectively. Williams is a phenomenal defender but his power/speed combo is muted somewhat by persistent contact issues that have followed him throughout his ascent. Melton came over from the Astros as part of the Brandon Lowe three-team deal in the offseason and shouldn’t have to wait too long for an everyday opportunity with the Rays.
  • TB Outfield #14
It’s still early in spring training, so there is no real cause for concern with Simpson being sidelined. However, his main attribute is speed, so any lingering hamstring soreness would be a major wrench in his value to both the Rays and fantasy managers. The Rays also added Cedric Mullins, Jacob Melton, Justyn-Henry Malloy, and Jake Fraley this offseason, so Simpson is not guaranteed a spot in this outfield.
  • TB Outfield #29
Yohan Ramírez put a slider on a tee for him, and Melton treated it exactly like he should have. The assumption has been that Melton is starting the season in the minors, since he’s behind Cedric Mullins on the depth chart in center, but the Rays’ situations in the corners are weak enough that Melton should be a threat for a starting spot with a strong spring. He’s the team’s second-most intriguing outfielder for fantasy purposes, and he’s probably a better overall player than Chandler Simpson.
  • TB Center Fielder #31
The crown jewel of Tampa Bay’s prospect haul from the Astros as part of a three-team swap that also included the Pirates, Melton struggled in his first taste of the big leagues this past season during a brief 32-game cameo where he batted .157 (11-for-70) with 29 strikeouts. Still, the Rays clearly view the 25-year-old as their long-term answer in center field, with veteran Cedric Mullins signed to a one-year deal as a temporary bridge. Neander added that Melton is not terribly far off and will have an opportunity to compete for a spot on the Rays’ season-opening roster next spring. He boasts an enticing power-speed profile for fantasy purposes and his immediate path to playing time feels more likely in the outfield corners which are occupied by Chandler Simpson and Josh Lowe for now. The move to Tampa Bay offering a clean reset — positioning him as a potential core piece of a younger roster rather than a fringe component behind Houston’s veteran-heavy group. He checks in as a borderline top-100 dynasty outfielder with the athleticism and upside to take a meaningful leap if everything clicks in spring training.
  • TB Center Fielder #31
Melton made his MLB debut and struggled to a .420 OPS over 70 at-bats, but was solid in Triple-A with a .286/.389/.556 slash over 35 games. The 2022 second-round pick should get a chance to compete for a role with Tampa Bay this spring, but fantasy managers should wait to see how things shake out before investing. There’s definitely some upside in keeper formats.

The framework of the finalized deal is the same that was reported earlier on Friday. Mike Burrows will be heading from the Pirates to the Astros, Brandon Lowe, Jake Mangum and Mason Montgomery will go from the Rays to the Pirates while Jacob Melton and Anderson Brito will go from the Astros to the Rays. The Astros have been inquiring on Burrows for a while now and was an obvious target of theirs to upgrade their starting rotation. The 26-year-old right-hander posted a 3.94 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and a 97/31 K/BB ratio over 96 innings in 23 appearances (19 starts) for the Pirates in 2025.

José Ramírez went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and a stolen base, propelling the Guardians to a 9-3 blowout win over the White Sox in Game 3 of the ALDS on Wednesday.

Ramírez helped Cleveland stave off elimination at Rate Field with a multi-hit performance after going hitless in six at-bats through the first two games of the best-of-five series. The 34-year-old franchise cornerstone snapped out of his brief postseason funk by scalding a 106.5-mph double off White Sox rookie Noah Schultz in the fifth inning. He swiped second base and crossed the plate thanks to a brilliant slide on a fielder’s choice later in the frame. He extended Cleveland’s lead by supplying a pair of key insurance runs with a triple down the left-field line with two outs in the eighth inning. He also made a phenomenal defensive play at the hot corner to take away a potential bases-loaded hit from Miguel Vargas in the sixth inning. The Guardians need one more victory in Game 4 on Thursday evening to keep their season alive and send it back to Cleveland for a winner-take-all Game 5 on Saturday.

Miguel Vargas went 1-for-4 with a single as the White Sox fell to the Guardians in Game 3 of the ALDS on Wednesday.

Vargas had the best opportunity to put Chicago back in front, and punch their ticket to an improbable ALCS appearance, when he lined out to Cleveland’s franchise cornerstone José Ramírez with the bases loaded to end the sixth inning. The White Sox still have an opportunity to close out the best-of-five series during a Game 4 showdown at home on Thursday evening.

Jo Adell went 2-for-4 with a three-run triple in a win over the White Sox in Game 3 of the ALDS on Wednesday.

Adell put Cleveland in front by rocketing a bases-clearing double into the right-field corner against White Sox rookie sensation Hagen Smith with two outs in the third inning. It was the big knock that helped turn the tide for the Guardians in a must-win affair on the road in Chicago to keep their postseason hopes alive.

Cade Smith fired two scoreless innings to slam the door on the White Sox in Game 3 of the ALDS on Wednesday.

Guardians manager Stephen Vogt wasn’t taking any chances in a must-win affair at Rate Field in Chicago, summoning Smith to protect a four-run advantage in the eighth inning. He needed just eight pitches to fire a perfect eighth before coming back out to work a flawless final frame. He struck out five of the six batters he faced. Smith hasn’t allowed a run in four postseason innings after not allowing a run over his final 15 regular-season innings dating back to August 24.

Foster Griffin recorded seven strikeouts and allowed one run over 2 2/3 innings in relief against the White Sox in Game 3 of the ALDS on Wednesday.

Making his first appearance in nearly two weeks, Griffin notched seven of the nine outs by strikeout and allowed just three baserunners after entering the contest with two outs in the opening frame following hard-throwing opener Daniel Espino. He generated eight swinging strikes and threw 39 of 53 pitches for strikes in the abbreviated relief outing. He’ll presumably be available to pitch in the final two games of the best-of-five series, provided that Cleveland continues to stave off elimination.

Noah Schultz allowed one run over three innings in relief against the Guardians during Game 3 of the ALDS on Wednesday.

Schultz was one of seven different pitchers to toe the rubber for Chicago in this one. He was the only one to face more than seven batters. The lone run against him came in the fifth when José Ramírez crossed the plate on a fielder’s choice after a double and stolen base put him on third base with only one out in the frame. He struck out one and also issued two walks.

Padres manager Craig Stammen told reporters Michael King will be available in relief during Game 4 of the NLDS against the Brewers on Wednesday.

There’s no tomorrow if San Diego doesn’t win tonight. It’ll be another all-hands situation for the Padres after King went two innings to pick up a save in a must-win Game 3 to extend the best-of-five series while Mason Miller was away on paternity leave. The 31-year-old probably won’t be asked to get more than a handful of outs, but he could be a break-glass option if the Padres get in trouble in the middle innings.

Padres activated RHP Mason Miller from the paternity list.

Miller is available for a must-win Game 4 showdown in San Diego after missing Game 3 to be with his family for the birth of their first child. The hard-throwing 28-year-old’s return is even more critical with fellow high-leverage specialist Adrian Morejon a virtual gametime decision due to a shoulder issue.

Wandy Peralta has been removed from the Padres’ roster for Game 4 of the NLDS against the Brewers on Wednesday.

Peralta’s stint on San Diego’s playoff roster lasted roughly 24 hours while All-Star closer Mason Miller was away from the club on paternity leave.

Miguel Rojas (back) is out of the lineup for Game 4 of the NLDS against the Braves on Wednesday.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters that Rojas isn’t feeling great and won’t be available off the bench after leaving Game 3 with lower back pain. However, they’re not considering removing him from their playoff roster since that would require him to miss the NLCS against the Brewers or Padres as well. It’ll be Enrique Hernández taking over at second base in his absence.
