Thorpe (elbow) activated from IL and sent to minors

Thorpe is making his way back from Tommy John surgery and hoping to make a handful of starts for the White Sox down the stretch. He threw 62 percent of his pitches for strikes in this one but had just a 10 percent swinging strike rate and didn’t get a single whiff on his four-seamer, which sat just 91.6 mph. His changeup got plenty of whiffs outside of the zone, and he got a few on his slider as well, but it’s hard to get overly excited right now about a low-velocity right-hander whose main weapon is a changeup. The 25-year-old was part of the Juan Soto trade that sent him from the Yankees to the Padres and then was later sent from the Padres to the White Sox as the headliner in the Dylan Cease trade.

Thorpe will be making his seventh minor league rehab start since late July. The 25-year-old former pitching prospect threw 83 pitches in his previous rehab outing for Triple-A Charlotte last week. He’s been working his way back from last year’s Tommy John surgery and should factor into Chicago’s pitching equation in the final month of the season.

Thorpe struck out six, issued two walks and threw 83 pitches (51 strikes) during his sixth minor league rehab outing since late July. He’s in the final stages of his rehabilitation from last year’s Tommy John surgery and figures to be in the mix to help the White Sox at some point in late August or early September. He’s a name to watch in deeper mixed leagues given his former top pitching prospect status.

Thorpe struck out five and didn’t walk a batter while allowing one hit. He threw 31 of his 43 pitches for strikes. It’s another promising outing for the 25-year-old, who has not pitched at any level since having Tommy John surgery in April of 2025. He will likely need to make at least two more rehab starts before he becomes an option for the White Sox in any capacity.

It’s been a long road back for Thorpe, who had Tommy John surgery in April of 2025 and then had an appendectomy in May of this year. The right-hander is a former top prospect from the Yankees, who was traded to the Padres as part of the Juan Soto deal. He was later traded from the Padres to the White Sox as part of the Dylan Cease trade. It’s unlikely he will make much of an impact for the White Sox this season, but a strong end of the year could set him up as a rotation option in 2027.

Thorpe will be pitching in his first game action since July 31, 2024. The 25-year-old former top pitching prospect has been working his way back after undergoing Tommy John surgery last March. He’ll require several weeks without any setbacks to build up his stamina and pitch count before he’s remotely close to making it back to Chicago. There’s a chance he’s ready to contribute for the ascending White Sox at some point in the later stages of the second half.

It’s merely a procedural move to free up a spot on Chicago’s 40-man roster while Thorpe continues working his way back from Tommy John surgery.

Thorpe had Tommy John surgery last year and then dealt with some tendinitis during spring training, which delayed his return. However, the 25-year-old has gotten back into his bullpen routine and has reportedly been looking good. He could begin a rehab assignment in the coming weeks. It will likely be a lengthy rehab, but perhaps Thorpe becomes an option for the White Sox this summer.

The right-hander had been shelved early in White Sox’ camp due to a bit of tendinitis in his surgically repaired right elbow. He’s feeling much improved now though and is hopeful that it was only a minor setback. He’ll throw another bullpen on Friday and continue his progression from there. He’ll begin the season on the injured list.
