The Nationals will activate DJ Herz from the IL and start him Monday against the Tigers.

Herz is returning from Tommy John and will be making his first major league appearance since Sept. 2024. Since returning last month from a June setback, he has a 4.24 ERA over 17 innings in six minor league starts. He got up to 65 pitches last time out, so four innings would seem to be a realistic expectation for him tomorrow.

Ethan Salas is at catcher and hitting seventh in Game 2 of the NL Wild Card Series against the Cubs on Wednesday.

Salas will make his playoff debut at just 20 years old handling the catching duties for veteran starter Nick Pivetta. The Padres have a chance to punch their ticket to the NLDS after scoring eight runs during a Game 1 blowout victory on Tuesday night at Petco Park. Here’s the full lineup: Fernando Tatis Jr. (RF), Dustin Harris (LF), Manny Machado (3B), Ty France (1B), Jackson Merrill (CF), Xander Bogaerts (SS), Salas (C), Austin Hays (DH) and Jake Cronenworth (2B).

Curtis Mead has been added to the Red Sox’ roster for the remainder of the AL Wild Card Series against the Yankees.

Mead hasn’t taken an at-bat in a game situation since suffering a fractured left wrist during his Red Sox debut back in late July. The 25-year-old corner infielder has been added to Boston’s playoff roster in the wake of Roman Anthony suffering yet another hand injury. He’ll be available off the bench with Boston facing elimination in Game 2 at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday.

Alec Bohm homered in the 10th after Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper went back-to-back in the eighth, and the Phillies edged the Braves 4-3 on Wednesday to stay alive in the NL Wild Card.

The Braves grabbed a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh after defensive miscues from Bohm on a sac bunt and Harper on a fly to right, but the Phillies came right back in the eighth, with Schwarber and Harper taking Dylan Lee deep after Lee went the entire regular season without ever allowing a homer to a lefty. Andrew Painter kept things tied afterwards, and Bohm hit a rare opposite field homer off Didier Fuentes in the 10th to give the Phillies the lead. Bohm’s homer was his third in 40 career postseason games. Including the regular season, it’s his ever extra-inning homer. Game 3 will take place Thursday. The Braves are expected to throw Grant Holmes as a starter or bulk guy, with the Phillies likely starting Aaron Nola and perhaps going to Zack Wheeler later.

Cristopher Sánchez was charged with three runs in 6 2/3 innings in Wednesday’s Game 2 against the Braves.

Sánchez allowed one run in the first and then was charged with two in the seventh after the defense botched a sac bunt, getting no outs, and let a routine fly to right drop for a double. With some more help, Sánchez would have gotten through seven allowing one run today.

Andrew Painter came up huge for the Phillies on Wednesday, pitching scoreless eighth, ninth and 10th innings for a win in Game 2 against the Braves.

With Jhoan Duran seemingly unavailable after throwing two innings Tuesday, the Phillies went to Painter in the eighth after tying the game at 3-3 in the top of the inning and just let him keeping. His first six pitches were actually balls, but he finally threw a strike with the seventh and then the eighth turned into a double-play ball from Michael Harris II and the ninth was a popout. Painter went on to allow one single in the ninth and two with a one-run lead in the 10th before striking out Dominic Smith to end the game. It’s the kind of showing from Painter that has to make the Phillies feel considerably better about their pen if they manage to advance.

Tyler Mahle limited the Phillies to one run over seven innings in a no-decision Wednesday in Game 2.

Mahle, making his first career postseason start at age 32, was on the ropes early, giving up a double and two singles to the first four batters he faced. However, he escaped with just one run in after a grounder back to the mound and a strikeout. He then allowed just three more hits over his remaining six innings. He left with the score tied 1-1, but he was put in line for the win when the Braves scored twice in the bottom of the seventh, only to watch Dylan Lee give up back-to-back homers to tie things up in the eighth.

Bryce Harper went 2-for-5 and hit a game-tying homer in the eighth against the Braves in Wednesday’s Game 2.

Harper singled in a run in the first and then hit the second of back-to-back homers with Kyle Schwarber to tie the game in the eighth after his own misplay helped the Braves go ahead by two runs in the seventh. Harper’s homer was his 18th in 59 postseason games.

Yordan Alvarez is in left field and hitting second for Game 2 of the AL Wild Card Series against the White Sox.

No real changes for the Astros, with the exception of Alvarez heading out to left field with Isaac Paredes moving to DH and Nick Allen entering at third base, as they try to stave off elimination and force a decisive Game 3 showdown. Here’s the full lineup: Jeremy Peña (SS), Alvarez (LF), Paredes (DH), Jose Altuve (2B), Yainer Diaz (C), Christian Walker (1B), Lucas Spence (CF), Cam Smith (RF) and Allen (3B).

Red Sox manager Chad Tracy told reporters that Roman Anthony has been removed from the club’s roster for the remainder of the AL Wild Card Series against the Yankees.

Tracy added that Anthony underwent an MRI that revealed new strains to different muscles in his right hand and wrist in addition to re-aggravating his previous finger-related issue. The 22-year-old made an early exit from Tuesday’s AL Wild Card Series opener and won’t be available for the Division Series, if Boston somehow manages to rally. The greater concern here is whether Anthony will require surgery, which would put his status for the outset of next season in serious jeopardy. It’s a disappointing development after Anthony missed most of the season with a finger injury. There should be additional clarity on his status in the coming days.

Luis Garcia is starting at first base and batting third against the Red Sox in Game 2 of the AL Wild Card series.

Garcia sat out Game 1 against left-hander Payton Tolle, but will be in the lineup with Sonny Gray on the hill. Jazz Chisholm will also start at second base and bat sixth, and Trent Grisham will play center field and bat seventh. George Lombard Jr. will be the only right-handed hitter in the lineup, but there could be plenty of turnover if the Red Sox go to a left-handed reliever out of the bullpen.
