AJ Blubaugh was charged with one run and recorded two outs in Game 1 of the AL Wild Card Series against the White Sox on Tuesday.

Blubaugh walked three of the five batters he faced and allowed one run to cross the plate when Munetaka Murakami lifted an RBI sacrifice fly to right field. He was lifted for southpaw Bryan King after throwing just 27 pitches. The Astros wound up burning through eight different relievers to cover a series-opening bullpen game.

There was little doubt Blubaugh would pitch tomorrow, but it’s a little surprising to see him get the ball first, just because that never happened all year. He led the majors with 96 relief innings, finishing with a 3.66 ERA in his 64 appearances. He’s been used in shorter stints lately than he was early on, so the Astros would be pushing it if they asked for more than two innings from him. The only two times he completed three innings both took place in May.

Hunter Brown, the team’s ace, last pitched on September 25, so he would be on three days’ rest if he pitched on Tuesday. The Astros are likely going to have him start Game 2. Peter Lambert just pitched Sunday, and Hayden Wesneski threw seven innings Saturday. As a result, it will probably be AJ Blubaugh for bulk innings on Tuesday before the Astros can turn things over to their starting rotation.

Blubaugh struck out Jake Burger with two on to end the eighth and was left in to pitch the ninth since there was no save situation then. He retired the side in order for his first save in 42 appearances this year. The 26-year-old has a solid 3.62 ERA while often pitching two innings at a time as a middle reliever.

AJ Blubaugh followed him and pitched 3 2/3 innings, allowing one run. That might open the door for him to start next time through the rotation. Or Bolton could get the call again. The Astros have Thursday off, so depending on how they want to play it, they won’t need a fifth starter again until May 12.

It’s a massive concern for Houston’s rotation, which lost ace Hunter Brown to a shoulder issue earlier this week. Javier left the contest with a trainer after attempting to warm up for his second inning of work after allowing one run on three hits in the opening frame. The 29-year-old righty will head for further evaluation and imaging to determine the severity of the issue. He’s in serious jeopardy of missing his next start, a rematch against the Rockies at home, on Tuesday. It would likely be AJ Blubaugh moving into the rotation in his absence with Spencer Arrighetti expected to come up and replace Brown already.

The Astros will transition to a six-man rotation around mid-April when they hit a stretch of 13 consecutive games without an off-day. Hunter Brown and Tatsuya Imai are the only locks right now with Cristian Javier, Mike Burrows and Lance McCullers Jr. figuring to break camp in the rotation as well. The battle for the sixth spot in the rotation involves a combination of Spencer Arrighetti, AJ Blubaugh and Peter Lambert. The other option is to bring up someone like Jason Alexander or Colton Gordon a couple weeks into the year.
  • HOU Starting Pitcher #69
The 25-year-old Blubaugh hasn’t gotten more than 10 outs in any of his last seven appearances, so the Astros weren’t going to let him go too long tonight. Maybe he could have snuck away with a win if he had been more efficient, but it wasn’t meant to be. Blubaugh finishes the season 3-1 with a 1.69 ERA and a 35/11 K/BB in 32 innings over the course of three starts and eight relief appearances. The Astros will probably want to hold him in reserve at the start of next season if they can avoid injuries next spring, but they have not had much luck in that department lately.
  • HOU Starting Pitcher #69
It’s a nice spot for streaming purposes in deeper mixed leagues as Blubaugh is coming off a pair of decent outings earlier this month where he struck out seven over three shutout frames in a spot start against the Rangers before twirling three shutout innings against the Mariners. The 25-year-old rookie holds a strong 1.93 ERA and 33/7 K/BB ratio across 28 innings over 10 appearances (two starts) this season at the highest level. It’s a must-win situation for the Astros if they want to stay alive in the AL playoff race.
  • HOU Starting Pitcher #69
Blubaugh made the spot start for the Astros on Tuesday and gave the team three scoreless innings, scattering two hits and one walk while striking out seven batters on 50 pitches. He ends the day with a 2.16 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, and a 32/7 K/BB ratio across 25 innings. The 25-year-old right-hander will likely return to a multi-inning role out of the bullpen.
  • HOU Starting Pitcher #69
Lance McCullers Jr. and J.P. France are also options, but it sounds like Blubaugh’s fine showing after replacing the injured Garcia on Tuesday will get him the nod. He pitched 3 1/3 hitless innings that night against the Jays. Since Blubaugh has totaled 14, 20, 42 and 36 pitches in his last four outings, he’s probably a long shot to complete five innings and qualify for a win Sunday, making him a mediocre steaming option.

Teruaki Sato was officially posted by the Hanshin Tigers of Japan on Sunday.

Today is the first day players can be posted, and those players can start negotiating with teams on Monday. As expected, right-handers Kaima Taira and Hiromi Itoh from Japan and Korean third baseman Si Hwan Roh were also posted today. The players from Japan have a 45-day window to agree to contracts, as opposed to 30 days for Roh, but the impending lockout makes that extra time moot.

Red Sox exercised RHP Garrett Whitlock’s $8.25 million option for 2027.

There had been some rumblings that the Red Sox could be working on a long-term extension with the 30-year-old right-hander, but there were never any doubts that he would return to be a major part of the Red Sox’ bullpen in 2027. Whitlock was outstanding over 54 appearances in 2026, registering a 1.72 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and a 59/9 K/BB ratio over 52 1/3 innings while notching seven victories and four saves.

Braves re-signed INF Jordan Groshans to a minor league contract.

Groshans, a first-round pick (12th overall) from the 2018 draft class (Blue Jays), had a nice season in the minor leagues in 2026 — slashing .276/.339/.576 with 33 homers, 88 RBI and a 91/42 K/BB ratio over 495 plate appearances between Double-A Columbus and Triple-A Gwinnett. He’s likely to open the 2027 season at the Triple-A level.

Padres’ left-hander Yuki Matsui will not exercise his opt-out clause and will remain with the team for 2027.

It’s an interesting decision as Matsui is only set to make $6.5 million in 2027 after a remarkable season in which he posted a 1.83 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and a 68/36 K/BB ratio over 64 innings in 54 appearances out of the Padres’ bullpen. He’ll once again function as part of the Padres’ setup corps in front of dominant closer Mason Miller.

Padres exercised RHP Kyle Hart’s $2.25 million club option for 2027.

The 33-year-old hurler made 46 appearances for the Padres during the 2026 campaign, compiling a 4.92 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and a 59/26 K/BB ratio over 64 innings of work. He’s likely to once again operate in a swingman role for the Padres in 2027 at a very affordable rate.

The Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters of Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball announced Sunday that they plan to post right-hander Hiromi Itoh.

Once that posting becomes official, Itoh and his representatives will have a 45-day window to negotiate with MLB teams. The 29-year-old hurler made 26 starts in 2026, registering a 3.18 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and a 159/34 K/BB ratio across 172 2/3 innings of work. He should generate plenty of interest among MLB teams that are looking for mid-rotation starters.

Braves signed INF/OF Vidal Bruján to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

The former top prospect has never been able to put it all together at the MLB level and is probably better suited as a utility player, which the Braves have plenty of use for. Bruján appeared in just nine games for the Mets in 2026, going 1-for-11 (.091) with one RBI in his 13 plate appearances. He spent the bulk of the season at Triple-A Syracuse where he slashed .278/.385/.421 with five homers, 34 RBI and 16 stolen bases in 258 plate appearances. He’ll add quality depth for the Braves.

Sammy Peralta has elected free agency.

As anticipated, the 28-year-old southpaw has chosen to hit the open market rather than accepting his outright assignment to Triple-A Salt Lake. Peralta made 16 appearances at the MLB level between the Rockies and Angels, struggling to a 6.65 ERA, 1.87 WHIP and a 23/9 K/BB ratio over 23 innings. He’ll almost assuredly have to settle for a minor league deal this winter with an invitation to big league camp.

Dunn appeared in nine games with the Rays during the 2026 campaign, going 1-for-11 (.091) with one RBI and a 3/1 K/BB ratio in his 12 plate appearances. He’s now free to peddle his wares on the open market.

Astros acquired RHP Evan Reifert from the Rays for cash considerations.

Astros’ new general manager Randy Flores wasted no time getting to work, acquiring the 27-year-old right-hander from the Rays. Reifert made 46 appearances at Triple-A Durham in 2026, registering a strong 2.48 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and an 81/34 K/BB ratio across 58 innings of work. He’ll get an opportunity to compete for a spot in the Astros’ bullpen during spring training.
