Pirates signed RHP José Urquidy to a minor league contract.

The 31-year-old right-hander signed a similar deal with the Pirates last offseason and wound up making five appearances for the Bucs at the MLB level before being traded to the White Sox in late July. He’ll once again add rotation depth for the Pirates and can continue to be ignored for fantasy purposes.
Should athletes time their family planning better?

The 31-year-old hurler was designated for assignment when the Phillies set their roster for the Wild Card Series against the Braves. After passing through waivers unclaimed, Urquidy opted to hit the open market rather than accepting an outright assignment to Triple-A Gwinnett. He did a decent job in his limited action with the Phillies, posting a 3.68 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and a 9/0 K/BB ratio across 7 1/3 innings.

Urquidy made just two appearances during his time with the Phillies, posting a 3.68 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and a 9/0 K/BB ratio over 7 1/3 innings of work. Someone needed to get the boot though to make room for the return of Jesus Luzardo on Sunday and Urquidy wound up drawing the short straw.

Urquidy can help cover for Jesús Luzardo’s absence, but he won’t be postseason eligible after getting picked up this late. He had a 4.37 ERA over 22 2/3 innings in six appearances for the White Sox. The Phillies moved Caleb Kilian to the 60-day IL to open up a spot on the 40-man for him, and they’ll need to send someone down once he reports to the team.

Urquidy loses his spot despite having allowed only three runs in 10 innings over his last three appearances. He had a 4.37 ERA in 22 2/3 innings over six total outings for the White Sox. Some team out there looking for innings could pick him up for the final week and a half, though he wouldn’t be postseason eligible.

Bryan Hudson, Jordan Hicks, Smith, Grant Taylor and Tyler Davis combined to limit the Twins to one run and strike out 15 batters. Smith got four of the strikeouts in his longest major league outing to date. It was surprising to see him pitch a third inning, given that he just threw two innings on Friday, but he was quite efficient in throwing 35 pitches. In part because of Smith’s success, José Urquidy never pitched in the game, though he probably would have if the White Sox had known they’d score eight runs between the sixth and the eighth to turn it into a rout.

Unfortunately, the White Sox were already down 4-0 after Jordan Hicks gave up three runs in the first and Tyler Gilbert allowed one run in the third. Urquidy did his part, but the White Sox offense never got back into the game. With Davis Martin having rejoined the rotation, the White Sox no longer need both Urquidy and Erick Fedde starting or bulking in separate games. Perhaps the two could piggyback against the Twins on Friday, but the team is probably best off playing it by ear.
  • CWS Starting Pitcher #70
Urquidy was coming off his best outing since Tommy John last Wednesday against the Cubs, but nothing much went right tonight. The first inning saw him throw 38 pitches, the highest total of his career, and give up two runs. In all, he threw 93 pitches to get nine outs, walking four and plunking two in the process. The White Sox have Thursday off, so they don’t need to start both Erick Fedde and Urquidy this weekend. Based on tonight, Fedde might be the better bet to face the Twins.

Sean Newcomb, Urquidy and Grant Taylor combined on a two-hitter today. Urquidy faced just one over the minimum in his best outing since elbow surgery. His previous eight-strikeout game came way back on Sept. 4, 2022. The excellent showing should ensure that he’ll pitch again as a starter or as a bulk guy Monday against the Rays.

With Davis Martin on the IL and Noah Schultz back in the minors, the White Sox currently have just three true rotation pitchers in Sean Burke, Luis Castillo and Anthony Kay. After Castillo starts Monday, they’ll rely heavily on the pen in the final two games of their series against the Cubs. With Thursday off, they could then perhaps split up their bulk-guy days next time through the rotation.

Urquidy struck out three batters on the night and didn’t issue a base on balls. He took over in the second inning after Sean Newcomb recorded the first four outs and Urquidy served up a two-run blast to Ben Malgeri before the inning was through. He gave up just one run the rest of the way though, allowing the White Sox’ offense to do the work for him to earn him a win. He now sports a miserable 8.10 ERA, 2.20 WHIP and a 9/2 K/BB ratio over 10 innings with the White Sox this season.

Max Muncy clobbered a solo homer as the Dodgers defeated the Braves in Game 4 of the NLDS on Wednesday.

Muncy went deep for the third time this postseason, supplying a critical insurance run for Los Angeles with a ninth-inning blast to right field off Atlanta closer Raisel Iglesias to put them up by three runs. The 36-year-old third baseman is up to 19 career playoff round-trippers dating back to 2018.

Shohei Ohtani walked, stole a base and scored a run against the Braves in Game 4 of the NLDS on Wednesday.

Ohtani single-handedly manufactured a run by swiping second base and advancing to third on an errant throw on the play following a leadoff walk in the second inning. It was Los Angeles’ first postseason run that didn’t come on a home run after their first 10 came via the long ball. He clearly doesn’t look like himself, but it wasn’t a huge factor as the Dodgers still managed to dispatch the Braves with relative ease in a four-game gentleman’s sweep.

Edwin Díaz fired a perfect ninth inning to pick up his second save of the playoffs as the Dodgers defeated the Braves in Game 4 of the NLDS on Wednesday.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts called upon Díaz in a save situation for the second time this postseason, this time to protect a three-run lead against the bottom of Atlanta’s order with a chance to end the best-of-five series. He punched out pinch-hitter Rowdy Tellez on an impressive 99.1 mph fastball and got Mauricio Dubón to fly out to right field before coaxing a series-ending fly ball from Austin Riley to send Los Angeles back to the NLCS to face either the Brewers or Padres later this week. It’s a massive development for the Dodgers that Díaz looks like his former self again after an abysmal, injury-plagued regular season.

Tyler Glasnow struck out five and allowed one run over 4 2/3 innings against the Braves in Game 4 of the NLDS on Wednesday.

Glasnow uncorked a wild pitch with two outs in the opening frame that allowed Michael Harris II to scamper home with the lone tally against him. He gave up only one hit, but wound up issuing five walks, which led to his exit with two outs in the fifth inning after just 78 pitches (44 strikes). He would’ve been charged with at least one additional run had Matt Olson’s 107.8 mph ground ball not been hit directly at Enrique Hernández following his departure.

Tyler Mahle surrendered two runs — one earned — over 6 1/3 innings against the Dodgers in Game 4 of the NLDS on Wednesday.

Mahle has exceeded even the most wildly optimistic expectations after coming over from the Giants at the trade deadline as he’s now allowed just two runs over 13 1/3 innings across a pair of starts this postseason. The 32-year-old impending free agent completely shut down Los Angeles’ star-studded lineup into the middle innings before being lifted with one out in the seventh inning after throwing 85 pitches (54 strikes). He finished with four strikeouts and allowed just four baserunners. The first run against him came in the second inning when Mauricio Dubón dropped a shallow pop up that allowed Shohei Ohtani to cross the plate. He was charged with an additional run following his departure in the seventh.

Parker Messick will start against the White Sox in Game 4 of the ALDS on Thursday.

No surprise here. Messick has an opportunity to help the Guardians force a winner-take-all Game 5 showdown in Cleveland later this week. The 25-year-old southpaw allowed two runs over 4 1/3 innings during Game 1 of the series. This will be the most important outing of his young career.

José Ramírez went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and a stolen base, propelling the Guardians to a 9-3 blowout win over the White Sox in Game 3 of the ALDS on Wednesday.

Ramírez helped Cleveland stave off elimination at Rate Field with a multi-hit performance after going hitless in six at-bats through the first two games of the best-of-five series. The 34-year-old franchise cornerstone snapped out of his brief postseason funk by scalding a 106.5-mph double off White Sox rookie Noah Schultz in the fifth inning. He swiped second base and crossed the plate thanks to a brilliant slide on a fielder’s choice later in the frame. He extended Cleveland’s lead by supplying a pair of key insurance runs with a triple down the left-field line with two outs in the eighth inning. He also made a phenomenal defensive play at the hot corner to take away a potential bases-loaded hit from Miguel Vargas in the sixth inning. The Guardians need one more victory in Game 4 on Thursday evening to keep their season alive and send it back to Cleveland for a winner-take-all Game 5 on Saturday.

Miguel Vargas went 1-for-4 with a single as the White Sox fell to the Guardians in Game 3 of the ALDS on Wednesday.

Vargas had the best opportunity to put Chicago back in front, and punch their ticket to an improbable ALCS appearance, when he lined out to Cleveland’s franchise cornerstone José Ramírez with the bases loaded to end the sixth inning. The White Sox still have an opportunity to close out the best-of-five series during a Game 4 showdown at home on Thursday evening.

Jo Adell went 2-for-4 with a three-run triple in a win over the White Sox in Game 3 of the ALDS on Wednesday.

Adell put Cleveland in front by rocketing a bases-clearing double into the right-field corner against White Sox rookie sensation Hagen Smith with two outs in the third inning. It was the big knock that helped turn the tide for the Guardians in a must-win affair on the road in Chicago to keep their postseason hopes alive.

Cade Smith fired two scoreless innings to slam the door on the White Sox in Game 3 of the ALDS on Wednesday.

Guardians manager Stephen Vogt wasn’t taking any chances in a must-win affair at Rate Field in Chicago, summoning Smith to protect a four-run advantage in the eighth inning. He needed just eight pitches to fire a perfect eighth before coming back out to work a flawless final frame. He struck out five of the six batters he faced. Smith hasn’t allowed a run in four postseason innings after not allowing a run over his final 15 regular-season innings dating back to August 24.
