The White Sox will likely use Erick Fedde and José Urquidy as bulk guys on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.

With Davis Martin on the IL and Noah Schultz back in the minors, the White Sox currently have just three true rotation pitchers in Sean Burke, Luis Castillo and Anthony Kay. After Castillo starts Monday, they’ll rely heavily on the pen in the final two games of their series against the Cubs. With Thursday off, they could then perhaps split up their bulk-guy days next time through the rotation.
Do Braves have value to defeat Dodgers in NLDS?
Drew Dinsick and Jay Croucher discuss if there is value in backing the Braves against the Dodgers in the NDLS with bettors facing a "healthy premium" in the market with Los Angeles.

The 31-year-old hurler was designated for assignment when the Phillies set their roster for the Wild Card Series against the Braves. After passing through waivers unclaimed, Urquidy opted to hit the open market rather than accepting an outright assignment to Triple-A Gwinnett. He did a decent job in his limited action with the Phillies, posting a 3.68 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and a 9/0 K/BB ratio across 7 1/3 innings.

Urquidy made just two appearances during his time with the Phillies, posting a 3.68 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and a 9/0 K/BB ratio over 7 1/3 innings of work. Someone needed to get the boot though to make room for the return of Jesus Luzardo on Sunday and Urquidy wound up drawing the short straw.

The right-hander punched out six batters on the night while walking a pair. The only run that scored against him came on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Gleyber Torres in the third inning. Aside from that, Fedde was in complete control. It was unfortunate for fantasy managers that he was lifted just one out shy of earning a victory. Fedde got eight whiffs on 89 pitches on the evening, posting a CSW of 30 percent. He’ll carry a 3.90 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and a 97/50 K/BB ratio (138 1/3 innings) into his regular season finale against the Royals in Kansas City on Wednesday.

Urquidy can help cover for Jesús Luzardo’s absence, but he won’t be postseason eligible after getting picked up this late. He had a 4.37 ERA over 22 2/3 innings in six appearances for the White Sox. The Phillies moved Caleb Kilian to the 60-day IL to open up a spot on the 40-man for him, and they’ll need to send someone down once he reports to the team.
  • CWS Starting Pitcher #70
Urquidy loses his spot despite having allowed only three runs in 10 innings over his last three appearances. He had a 4.37 ERA in 22 2/3 innings over six total outings for the White Sox. Some team out there looking for innings could pick him up for the final week and a half, though he wouldn’t be postseason eligible.
  • CWS Starting Pitcher #47
Fedde struck out three batters on the night and didn’t allow a base on balls. He took over in the third inning and worked into the eighth. He served up a solo homer to Oneil Cruz in the fourth inning, then exited with a man on second and one out in the eighth and that runner ultimately scored against the bullpen. Fedde got six whiffs on 81 pitches on the night, posting an uninspiring CSW of 22 percent. He’ll bring a respectable 3.97 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and a 91/48 K/BB ratio (133 2/3 innings) into Tuesday’s matchup against the Guardians in Cleveland.
  • CWS Starting Pitcher #82
Smith threw three innings for the first time in a scoreless outing Sunday against the Pirates, but that only took him 35 pitches. His high pitch count as a major leaguer was 48 over two innings in his debut on Aug. 9. So, one imagines the White Sox will be very happy if he can get through three again Thursday, Two is probably the better bet. Erick Fedde will be available to go long behind him.
  • CWS Starting Pitcher #82
Bryan Hudson, Jordan Hicks, Smith, Grant Taylor and Tyler Davis combined to limit the Twins to one run and strike out 15 batters. Smith got four of the strikeouts in his longest major league outing to date. It was surprising to see him pitch a third inning, given that he just threw two innings on Friday, but he was quite efficient in throwing 35 pitches. In part because of Smith’s success, José Urquidy never pitched in the game, though he probably would have if the White Sox had known they’d score eight runs between the sixth and the eighth to turn it into a rout.
  • CWS Starting Pitcher #47
He struck out two and allowed just three hits, lowering his season ERA to 4.00 on the dot. Fedde has only allowed two runs in four games since August 13, though two of those were as a follower. It’s not like we’re advocating you to fire him up next week against the Pirates, but he’s been more serviceable than you might have thought.
  • CWS Starting Pitcher #70
Unfortunately, the White Sox were already down 4-0 after Jordan Hicks gave up three runs in the first and Tyler Gilbert allowed one run in the third. Urquidy did his part, but the White Sox offense never got back into the game. With Davis Martin having rejoined the rotation, the White Sox no longer need both Urquidy and Erick Fedde starting or bulking in separate games. Perhaps the two could piggyback against the Twins on Friday, but the team is probably best off playing it by ear.

The Yankees confirmed that Gerrit Cole would start Game 1 of the ALDS against the Rays on Saturday.

Cole would have started Game 3 against the Red Sox. He figures to be followed by Cam Schlittler and Max Fried against the Rays. There is an extra day off in the ALDS, so the Yankees will probably use just the three starters, putting Carlos Rodón in the bullpen again.

Ricky Vanasco has elected free agency.

The 27-year-old right-hander had been sent outright to Triple-A Gwinnett on Wednesday, but rather than accepting the outright assignment, he’ll take his chances on the open market. Vanasco made five terrible appearances for the Tigers in 2026, posting a 15.63 ERA, 3.16 WHIP and a 4/6 K/BB ratio over 6 1/3 innings.

The 26-year-old hurler had been designated for assignment on Monday and passed through waivers unclaimed. He’ll have the option at the outset of the offseason to elect free agency if he so chooses. Little spent most of the season at the Triple-A level, posting a 7.28 ERA, 1.88 WHIP and a 60/46 K/BB ratio over 50 2/3 innings in 44 appearances.

Michael Harris II clobbered a three-run homer in the opening inning on Thursday, powering the Braves to a 6-2 victory over the Phillies in a decisive Game 3 of their Wild Card Series.

After the Phillies were held scoreless in the top half of the first, the Braves got something going as Ronald Acuna Jr. and Matt Olson worked Aaron Nola for back-to-back one-out walks. Harris then strode to the dish and pulverized a 2-0 sinker for a 387-foot (100.5-mph EV) three-run shot, giving the Braves a lead that they would never relinquish. Harris finished the night 1-for-3 and was also hit by a pitch. He’ll look to continue his offensive rampage against the Dodgers in the NLDS starting on Saturday in Los Angeles.

Ozzie Albies went 1-for-2 and slugged a two-run homer on Thursday night, helping to propel the Braves to the NLDS with a convincing victory over the Phillies in Game 3 of the Wild Card Series.

The Braves already held a 3-0 advantage when Albies clobbered an 0-1 fastball from Zack Wheeler for a 419-foot (106.0-mph EV) two-run shot in the fourth inning. That would be more than enough run support for the Braves’ bullpen in this one. Albies also drew a walk in the contest, reaching base safely in three of his four plate appearances. Next up will be a battle against the Dodgers in Los Angeles on Saturday.

Matt Olson went 1-for-3 with a solo homer, walk and two runs scored as the Braves dispatched of the Phillies in Game 3 of the Wild Card Series on Thursday night.

Olson worked Phillies’ starter Aaron Nola for a one-out walk in the opening inning, then rode home on Michael Harris II’s go-ahead three-run blast. He then did some yard work of his own in the eighth inning, tagging Jonathan Bowlan for a 416-foot (107.2-mph EV) solo shot that increased the Braves’ lead to 6-1. That was one of three Braves’ homers off the Phillies in the series-clinching victory. Next up, a matchup with the Dodgers in the NLDS.

Ray Kerr did an outstanding job as an opener for the Braves in Game 3 of their Wild Card Series against the Phillies on Thursday, allowing just one hit and one walk over 3 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball.

The 32-year-old southpaw struck out two batters in the brilliant performance. He allowed a one-out single to Kyle Schwarber in the first inning and then walked Schwarber to open the fourth. That was the extent of the traffic against him and the Phillies never really threatened. Kerr threw a season-high 47 pitches in the game, getting five swings and misses while registering a CSW of 23 percent. He didn’t pitch deep enough to factor into the decision, but Kerr was a major part of the reason why the Braves are advancing to the NLDS.

Kyle Schwarber went 2-for-3, drew a walk and scored a run in the Phillies’ season-ending loss to the Braves in Game 3 of the Wild Card Series on Thursday evening in Atlanta.

Schwarber singled off of Ray Kerr in the first inning, but never advanced past first base. He then drew a walk to open the fourth inning and was erased on a fielder’s choice. Schwarber also chased Grant Holmes with a one-out single in the sixth inning, ultimately scoring the club’s first run on a ground out off the bat of Alec Bohm. While it was a disappointing showing for the Phillies’ offense, Schwarber definitely did his job on Thursday night.

Aaron Nola struggled in a losing effort against the Braves in Game 3 of the Wild Card Series on Thursday, giving up three runs on two hits and two walks in only 1 2/3 innings of work.

Nola struck out one batter in the abbreviated outing. All of the damage done against him came in the opening inning as Ronald Acuna Jr. and Matt Olson worked back-to-back walks with one out. Michael Harris II followed with a three-run blast that gave the Braves the early lead. Nola got just three whiffs on 38 pitches on the night, posting a CSW of 21 percent. The 33-year-old hurler will now have to go through an entire offseason with the bad taste from this one in his mouth.
