Drew Waters has elected free agency.

Waters was sent outright to Triple-A Omaha in early September by the Royals. He spent the entire season at the Triple-A level, slashing .262/.323/.446 with 14 homers, 54 RBI and 21 stolen bases in 439 plate appearances. He has proven to be quality outfield depth and shouldn’t have any difficulty finding a new home this offseason.
Should athletes time their family planning better?
After Mason Miller was unavailable for a crucial Padres NLDS game due to the birth of his child, Nick Wright and Dan Le Batard tap into an age-old debate: Should athletes be more careful about when they have children?

Waters passed through waivers after being designated for assignment earlier this week. He’ll presumably stick around with Kansas City for the remainder of the season as organizational depth. The 27-year-old didn’t end up making an appearance after being called up earlier this month.

Waters was a notable prospect with Atlanta before being shipped to Kansas City nearly a half decade ago. The 27-year-old hasn’t been able to carve out a permanent spot in the majors, hitting just .234 with 14 homers and 21 steals in 684 plate appearances since 2022. He’s young enough that there’s probably an organization out there willing to roll the dice on Waters as a reclamation project.

It really doesn’t say much for the Royals that Waters is their September callup and is getting yet another chance here after hitting just .251/.312/.402 for Omaha this season. The 27-year-old debuted for Kansas City in 2022 and has hit .234/.300/.369 in 684 plate appearances as a major leaguer. He’ll probably get an occasional outfield start against righties.

The 27-year-old outfielder was removed from the team’s 40-man roster on Wednesday, but he passed through waivers unclaimed and will continue to function as extra outfield depth for the Royals. He should get an opportunity with the big league club at some point during the 2026 campaign.

Waters just hasn’t looked like a major leaguer the last couple of years, and he didn’t change any minds while hitting .188/.250/.281 this spring. If he clears waivers, he’ll have to accept an outright assignment,

Waters greeted Aidan Anderson in the first inning, crushing the first pitch that he saw for a 440-foot (108.8 mph) two-run home run that increased the Royals’ lead to 7-4. Waters also walked in the second inning and scored as Jonathan India bounced into a double play. The 27-year-old outfielder is off to a slow start this spring, hitting just .231 (3-for-13), so hopefully this is just what he needs to get him going.

The Royals needed to free up a spot on their active roster to squeeze Luke Maile in on Friday night to provide depth behind the plate and Waters was the unfortunate roster casualty. He’ll get another opportunity with the big league club in relatively short order.

This will make back-to-back games against right-handed pitchers that Waters isn’t starting. The 26-year-old begins Friday’s game on the bench with Nick Loftin hitting seventh and playing left field.

It appears to be nothing more than a routine night off for the 26-year-old outfielder. Waters has been unimpressive in his time with the Royals this season, slashing .269/.307/.359 with one homer, 13 RBI, and five stolen bases in 176 plate appearances. Nick Loftin will start in his place in left field and will bat seventh against Yankees’ right-hander Will Warren.

Massey was scratched from the lineup on May 28 with left ankle soreness before returning three days later. If it’s still bothering him, that’s a good excuse to put him on a rehab assignment for a spell, though he has all of his options remaining and there was no reason the Royals couldn’t have sent him down several weeks ago. Massey has hit a disastrous .202/.221/.258 over 209 plate appearances as one of the league’s worst players this year. Jonathan India will start at second base for now, though he’s been doing quite a bit of that anyway. Nick Loftin and Drew Waters figure to pick up extra at-bats in Massey’s place.

Hagen Smith will open Game 4 of the ALDS against the Guardians on Thursday.

Smith draws the opening assignment after throwing 21 pitches in relief during Wednesday’s Game 3 loss to the Guardians. He walked a pair of batters and gave up on hit during the abbreviated outing. The 23-year-old southpaw has been a revelation this season and has allowed just one run over 6 1/3 innings this postseason. Ideally, the White Sox would like to jump out to an early lead before turning the ball over the Grant Taylor with a chance to wrap up the series and advance to face the Rays in the ALCS this weekend.

Victor Mesa Jr. blasted a go-ahead two-run homer to propel the Rays to a series-clinching 4-3 victory over the Yankees in Game 3 of the ALDS on Wednesday.

Mesa connected on a hanging slider from Yankees ace Max Fried, sending a majestic 401-foot moonshot into the front row of the right-field seats to put Tampa Bay ahead with two outs in the sixth inning. It was his lone hit in four at-bats, but it made the difference in a low-scoring showdown in New York as the Rays completed a sweep of their division rivals to punch their ticket to the ALCS for the first time since the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. They’ll face either the White Sox or Guardians later this week at Tropicana Field.

Anthony Volpe went 2-for-4 with an RBI double in the Yankees’ season-ending loss to the Rays in Game 3 of the ALDS on Wednesday.

Baseball is a game of inches. Literally. Nobody is more aware of that age-old truism than Volpe as the Yankees were unable to stave off elimination and keep their season alive. It looked momentarily like the much-harangued former top prospect was going to have his signature moment at Yankee Stadium before a replay review overturned a potential game-tying home run to left field due to some fairly obvious fan interference in the sixth inning. He struck out on seven pitches against Rays closer Bryan Baker leading off the ninth as the Yankees were swept out of the postseason by their division rivals.

Bryan Baker fired a scoreless ninth inning to pick up the save in a series-clinching win over the Yankees in Game 3 of the ALDS on Wednesday.

Baker got the call in a save situation for the third consecutive game and managed to once again slam the door. He struck out Anthony Volpe on seven pitches before issuing a four-pitch walk to Spencer Jones. He didn’t look particularly sharp early on, but Rays pitching coach Kyle Snyder was able to somehow get him back on track with a timely mound visit. Baker responded by getting Jazz Chisholm Jr. to ground into a force out before striking out Trent Grisham to end the series.

Andy Pages smacked a go-ahead two-run single to lead the Dodgers to a 4-1 series-clinching win over the Braves in Game 4 of the NLDS on Wednesday.

Pages delievered the metaphorical knockout punch for Los Angeles, coming through with a two-run single on a full-count fastball from Atlanta veteran reliever Robert Suarez to put the Dodgers ahead and send their star-studded juggernaut back to the NLCS for the third consecutive season. His heroics were set up by two-out walks to Josue De Paula and Kyle Tucker that loaded the bases. Pages has been much maligned for his postseason struggles over the last two years, but he came through with four hits over the final two games of the series to send Atlanta packing.

Michael Harris II went 2-for-3 with a stolen base and a run scored as the Braves suffered a season-ending loss to the Dodgers in Game 4 of the NLDS on Wednesday.

Harris was one of the few bright spots for the Braves as they once again were unable to come up with a big hit when presented with plenty of opportunities against Los Angeles, going 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position during a brutal series-ending loss. The 25-year-old center fielder gave Atlanta an early lead when he reached on a leadoff single and swiped second base before scampering home on a wild pitch from Dodgers starter Tyler Glasnow with two outs in the opening frame. He also doubled to bring the potential tying run to the plate with two outs in the seventh inning.

Max Muncy clobbered a solo homer as the Dodgers defeated the Braves in Game 4 of the NLDS on Wednesday.

Muncy went deep for the third time this postseason, supplying a critical insurance run for Los Angeles with a ninth-inning blast to right field off Atlanta closer Raisel Iglesias to put them up by three runs. The 36-year-old third baseman is up to 19 career playoff round-trippers dating back to 2018.

Ronald Acuña Jr. went 0-for-3 with a strikeout as the Braves fell to the Dodgers in Game 4 of the NLDS on Wednesday.

Acuña, who played through a right knee issue for most of the series, finished 2-for-15 with zero extra-base hits as Atlanta’s season came to an end at the hands of the back-to-back defending World Series champions. The 28-year-old stalwart remains one of the more impactful power/speed combo threats in the fantasy landscape and will be an early-round pick in fantasy leagues next spring, despite his seemingly omnipresent injury concerns.
