The Brewers did not make any changes to their roster for the NLCS.

If it’s not broke, don’t fix it. The Brewers will roll with exactly the same 26-man roster that they used to get past the Padres in the Division Series. The NLCS gets underway on Saturday evening in Milwaukee with an epic pitching showdown between Brewers’ ace Jacob Misiorowski and Dodgers’ star southpaw Tarik Skubal.
Is it time for Dodgers to bench Ohtani?
Not So Fast's Paul Pabst and Andrew Perloff discuss Shohei Ohtani's dramatic postseason struggles and debate whether the Dodgers should consider benching their struggling superstar.

Misiorowski had to worked hard, as he threw 94 pitches before being pulled in the fifth. The 24-year-old struck out five while generating 10 swings and misses while topping out at 104 mph and averaging 100.7 with his heater; just a tick above his 100.6 mph average in the regular season. The issue was command, as he threw just 60 pitches for strikes and walked three. Misiorowski could be available for Game 4 if the Brew Crew need him, but more than likely, he’ll be asked to start Game 5 in Los Angeles; assuming there’s no sweep, of course.

Misiorowski will square off against Dodgers trade deadline acquisition Tarik Skubal, who was reportedly pursued by the Brewers prior to the deal with Los Angeles, to kick off the best-of-seven opener in Milwaukee. Logan Henderson will start Game 2, and the plan is for Robert Gasser to get the nod in Game 3. There are plenty of narratives here, but the most compelling to monitor is whether Misiorowski can go shut down Los Angeles’ star-studded lineup multiple times to help lead the Brewers to the Fall Classic for the first time since 1982. The hard-throwing 24-year-old allowed two runs over four innings during his playoff debut against the Padres last weekend.

He struck out six. The Padres succeeded in fouling off a whopping 30 pitches in Misiorowski’s four innings, driving up his pitch count and leading to an early exit. Both runs scored in the second, an inning that featured that featured three straight singles with one out. The inning could have turned into a disastrous one after first baseman Jake Bauers tried and failed to get an out at home on a grounder., but Misiorowski was able to prevent further damage by getting Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado to ground out. Misiorowski figures to get the ball again in Game 5 if the NLDS goes the distance.

No surprise here. Brewers manager Pat Murphy confirmed that fellow youngster Logan Henderson will get the ball for Game 2. Misiorowski made the leap from hard-throwing rookie phenom to full-fledged front-of-the-rotation superstar this season with a microscopic 1.80 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and 252/44 K/BB ratio across 174 2/3 innings over 30 starts. He’ll spearhead Milwaukee’s pitching staff when they open up postseason play against either the Padres or Cubs later this week.

In his final start before the postseason, Misiorowski picked up his 16th win and struck out five against two walks. It was a remarkable first full campaign for the 24-year-old, and he finishes the regular season with a 1.90 ERA and a remarkable 252/44 K/BB ratio over 174 2/3 innings. He’ll start Game 1 of the NLDS, either against the Cubs or Padres.

It figured that at least one of Misiorowski’s final two starts would be a short one, and he was pulled after allowing only one baserunner and throwing 44 pitches tonight. The outing lowered his ERA ever so slightly to 1.86. He’s expected to go longer Saturday against the Cardinals and then make a Game 1 start in the NLDS.

Nick Gonzales did Misiorowski a big favor in the fourth, when he had a bad read and decided against trying to score on a groundball single that deflected into the outfield. Ryan O’Hearn saw the ball and assumed Gonzales would keep going, so he was thrown out between second and third. It should have been a 1-1 game with runners on the corners and one out at that point. Instead, Misiorowski escaped the jam without any damage, and he got the win in spite of a rather quick hook after 82 pitches. He’s 15-5 with a 1.89 ERA. Next up for him is probably in start in Philly on Tuesday, unless the Brewers would prefer to have him make a shorter start on four days’ rest Sunday against the Orioles.

Misirowski threw fastballs on 63 of his 93 pitches and topped out at 104.5 mph before exiting with the scored tied 1-1 tonight. All nine of his strikeouts came on the heater. He’s up to 236 strikeouts for the season, which is the highest total for an NL starter since Spencer Strider came in at 281 in 2023. He should make his next start next Tuesday against the Pirates.

Misiorowski didn’t have it in this start from the jump. He walked Pete Crow-Armstrong to start this game with four straight balls after getting ahead 0-2 on him and then Alex Bregman made him pay just after with a two-run homer. The second inning wasn’t much better as Misiorowski tossed 31 pitches and the Cubs brought home three more runs. For the first time in a while, his command was all over the place as he missed spot after spot. His fastball didn’t even have a 40% zone rate and by his second time around the Cubs’ lineup, he was leading with his cutter. That pitch was erratic too and Misiorowski looked more like the pitcher we saw on his worst days during his rookie season than who he’s become this year. Nevertheless, he’ll have a chance to right the ship against these same Cubs next time out.

Misiorowski punched out six batters on the night while issuing a pair of walks. All of the damage done against him came in the fifth inning as Jared Young smacked an RBI double and scored on an RBI single off the bat of Christopher Morel. The 24-year-old right-hander generated 12 swings and misses on 89 pitches in the ballgame — half of those on his fastball — while posting a CSW of 26 percent. Now 14-5 on the season, he’ll carry a pristine 1.73 ERA, 0.75 WHIP and a 222/35 K/BB ratio (151 innings) into Wednesday’s divisional showdown against the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

Freddy Peralta shut out the Guardians for six innings Tuesday as the Rays won 3-1 in order to even the ALCS at one game apiece.

Peralta allowed four hits, walked two and struck out six while topping out at 99.4 mph on the radar gun tonight. His 96.9 mph average with his fastball was 2.6 mph better than his mark from the regular season. Including his two postseason outings, he’s gone eight straight starts without allowing more than one run. The ALCS will resume in Cleveland on Wednesday, with Nick Martinez and Gavin Williams expected to start.

Bryan Baker needed just eight pitches to work a scoreless ninth against the Guardians for a save in Game 2 of the ALCS on Tuesday.

Baker has yet to allow a hit while pitching four scoreless innings and earning for saves this postseason. That his velocity is down about two mph just hasn’t mattered yet.

Parker Messick was charged with three unearned runs in five innings in Tuesday’s loss to the Rays.

All of the runs came after a José Ramírez error in the fourth. Even before the error, Messick barely missed out on a double play ball from the second batter of the inning — Victor Mesa Jr. was originally called out at first but it was overturned on replay — and then got another chopper that would have resulted in an out if it wasn’t Chandler Simpson running. The error scored one run and then a single from Liam Hicks plated two. It’s Messick’s second loss in three postseason starts, though this was his best performance of the three.

Liam Hicks had two hits and two RBI from the eighth spot in the order in Tuesday’s win over the Guardians.

Hicks made it a 3-0 game with his two-run single off Parker Messick in the fourth. Hicks usually sits against lefties and didn’t start Game 1 against Foster Griffin, but he delivered in a rare opportunity tonight. He was 4-for-24 with one extra-base hit versus southpaws over the final two months of the regular season after being acquired from the Marlins.

Brandon Woodruff threw 31 pitches in a bullpen session Tuesday and could face hitters next time out.

Woodruff, who is trying to make his way back from another round of shoulder issues, said his stuff today was “pretty good.” He’s aiming to contribute if the Brewers advance to the World Series.

Shohei Ohtani will be in the lineup for Wednesday’s Game 3 against the Brewers, manager Dave Roberts said.

Ohtani is working on some mechanical tweaks and is hoping he’s figured something out. Even with Josue De Paula waiting in the wings, the Dodgers don’t really have much choice other than to stick with the four-time MVP, even if he is 3-for-20 in the postseason and looking just as bad as the line suggests.

Austin Hedges is hitting eighth and catching against the Rays on Tuesday in Game 2 of the ALCS.

Hedges is behind the plate, meaning Patrick Bailey will begin Tuesday’s contest on the bench. That’s the only player change for the Guardians as they look to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series. The full lineup behind Parker Messick: Steven Kwan LF, Jose Ramirez 3B, Chase DeLauter DH, Jo Adell RF, Travis Bazzana 2B, Petey Halpin CF, Hedges C and Brayan Rocchio hitting ninth at shortstop.

Chandler Simpson is playing left field and hitting seventh against the Guardians on Tuesday in Game 2 of the ALCS.

Even with another left-hander on the mound for the Guardians, the Rays will have Simpson play left field after he sat in the Game 1 loss. Ryan Vilade will open the game on the bench, but likely be used before Tuesday’s game comes to a close, if needed. The full lineup as Tampa Bay looks to avoid an 0-2 hole with Freddy Peralta on the mound for the Rays: Yandy Diaz DH, Jonathan Aranda 1B, Junior Caminero 3B, Victor Mesa Jr. RF, Jonny DeLuca CF, Simpson LF, Ben Williamson 2B, Liam Hicks C and Taylor Walls at shortstop.

Twins re-signed RHP Chris Vallimont to a minor league contract.

Vallimont, 29, worked mostly as a starter for Double-A Wichita this year, posting a 4.33 ERA and a 68/23 K/BB in 70 2/3 innings. He’s made one major league appearance in his career, getting two outs without allowing a run in a game for the Orioles in 2023.

MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reports that Joe Espada will meet with the Seattle Mariners about their manager job.

Back in August, Astros owner Jim Crane told the media that Joe Espada would manage the team for the remainder of the season and a decision on his future would be made after the season. Even though he’s unsigned going forward, Espada’s contract doesn’t officially end until the end of the month, so the Mariners needed and received permission to talk to him. In three seasons as the Astros’ manager, Espada has gone 256-229, winning the AL West in both 2024 and 2026, but the team underperformed this season and looked listless in a playoff loss to the White Sox.
