The Rockies could promote Ryan Spilborghs on Friday to play center field.

Center field has been the weak link for the Rockies this season with Cory Sullivan and Choo Freeman combining for just three home runs, 30 RBI and 111 strikeouts. Spilborghs lacks the range of the alternatives, but he hit .280 in 75 at-bats earlier this season with the Rockies and could get an extended look the remainder of this season.

Dodgers’ skipper Dave Roberts told reporters on Thursday that right-hander Edwin Díaz (elbow) threw 28 pitches during a successful bullpen session.

Roberts also noted that the Dodgers’ closer looked “really good” during the session. He remains on track to rejoin the club’s bullpen after the All-Star break, which would shift Tanner Scott back into a setup role.
    Swanson red-hot in 'unfathomable' turnaround
James Schiano highlights Dansby Swanson's offensive surge over the past 13 games with the Cubs, which includes nine homers, 29 RBIs, and a place in the history books.

Dodgers sent RHP Jonathan Hernandez outright to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Hernandez was designated for assignment on Tuesday and passed through waivers unclaimed. It’s unclear if he’ll elect free agency or remain with the Dodgers as excess bullpen depth at the Tripel-A level. The 29-year-old posted a miserable 8.15 ERA, 1.75 WHIP and a 15/12 K/BB ratio over 17 2/3 innings in 12 appearances with the Dodgers.

Astros optioned RHP Miguel Ullola to Triple-A Sugar Land.

Ullola made his MLB debut against the Twins on Monday, racking up four strikeouts over two scoreless innings. He then followed that up with three strikeouts over two perfect frames in the series finale on Wednesday. The only logical reason for the demotion would be to keep him stretched out as a starter at the Triple-A level until he’s needed in the same role with the Astros.

Cubs optioned LHP Jordan Wicks to Triple-A Iowa.

Wicks will return to the rotation at Triple-A Iowa where he’ll remain stretched out as a starter rather than working sporadically out of the Cubs’ bullpen. The 26-year-old hurler has posted a 10.45 ERA, 1.94 WHIP and an 8/2 K/BB ratio over 10 1/3 innings with the Cubs this season. The Cubs will make a corresponding move prior to Friday’s series opener against the Cardinals.

Phillies optioned RHP Alan Rangel to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Rangel pitched well in Thursday’s start against the Pirates, walking four batters over four scoreless frames. He’ll continue to work as a starter or as a multi-inning reliever at the Triple-A level, staying ready for the next time that he’s needed to work for the Phillies. A corresponding move will be made prior to Friday’s game.

Yankees’ pitching prospect Carlos Lagrange landed on the injured list at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre with a right shoulder injury.

The 23-year-old is scheduled to undergo an MRI exam to determine the severity of the injury. The Yankees obviously are going to take every precaution with their prized right-hander so anticipate him being out for a while.

Emerson Hancock will piggyback with Logan Gilbert on Saturday against the White Sox.

It sounds like the Mariners will continue with this odd piggybacking arrangement through the All-Star break to keep all six of their starters happy. That means George Kirby will start on Sunday with Bryan Woo set to take the ball for Tuesday’s series opener against the Marlins in Miami.

Dustin Harris has elected free agency.

The 26-year-old exercised the opt-out clause in his minor league deal with the White Sox and is now free to explore the open market. Harris has hit .233/.333/.302 with zero homers, five RBI and a 7/6 K/BB ratio in 52 plate appearances between the White Sox and Astros this season.

Padres activated RHP Germán Márquez from the 15-day injured list.

Márquez has been working out of the bullpen at Triple-A El Paso during his minor league rehab assignment and it sounds like that’s how he’ll be eased back into action with the Padres as well. Márquez has posted a 5.76 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and a 19/12 K/BB ratio over 29 2/3 innings on the season.

Padres placed RHP Jason Adam on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to June 30, with a right shoulder strain.

The 34-year-old hurler has been terrific between stints on the injured list this season, registering a 2.51 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and a 22/8 K/BB ratio over 32 1/3 innings in 36 appearances. No word yet on how long he’ll be shelved for. German Marquez was activated from the injured list in a corresponding move on Thursday.
