The 36-year-old catcher finishes his 12-year MLB career with 766 hits, 93 home runs, and 376 RBI. He suited up for the Padres, Rockies, Giants, Orioles, and Athletics before spending some time last season as minor league depth for the Phillies.

Bello needed just 28 pitches to get nine outs to finish off a 14-2 game. He’s certainly making a case for getting more work in close games while having allowed only one run in 16 2/3 innings over four appearances since returning to the majors on July 12. But at least he’s taking some pressure off Boston’s bullpen as is.

That’s more runs than he allowed in six starts in March and April (eight in 37 innings) or in five starts in May (seven in 30 2/3 innings). Martin opened the year 8-1 with a 2.00 ERA, but since the beginning of June, he’s 1-5 with a 6.79 ERA. His peripherals aren’t as bad as his ERA, so maybe he deserves to keep his rotation spot for now. He’s on thin ice, though. He’ll face the Guardians on Sunday.

Abreu has eight homers and three two-homer games in 18 games since the break, even though he’s batting just .200 during the span (14-for-70). He’s three homers away from matching last year’s total, which seems good, but then he’s already had 71 more plate appearances than he did then, since he’s avoided the IL and he’s starting regularly against lefties.

Machado doubled in the first inning to drive in the first run of the game before scoring on a base hit by Jackson Merrill. With the bases loaded in the second inning, he drove in two more with a single. Machado’s third hit of the game in the sixth would give him a fourth RBI. The 34-year-old third baseman is hitting .213/.295/.429 with 23 homers, 58 runs scored, and 69 RBI across 472 plate appearances, though he’s come around over the last month with a .276 batting average and seven homers since the start of July.

Arenado’s only hit of the game put the D-backs on the board with a two-run homer off Germán Márquez in the seventh inning to break the shutout. It was the 16th home run of the season for the 35-year-old third baseman. He’s on pace for his best power output since 2023. Arenado is hitting .244/.325/.428 with 53 runs scored and 53 RBI across 418 plate appearances.

Vásquez has been alternating in and out of the rotation over the last several weeks. Tuesday’s start was an excellent one for him as he held the D-backs scoreless over six frames. He scattered just two hits and one walk, relying on weak contact as he struck out one batter. The 27-year-old right-hander ends the day with a 4.19 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, and a 65/31 K/BB ratio across 101 innings. With Casey Mize and Robbie Ray now in San Diego, there’s a good chance Vásquez returns to a long relief role in the bullpen.

The Padres were all over Rodriguez in this one, starting with a three-run first inning on two doubles and two base hits. San Diego would bring three more runs in to score in the second, though two were unearned following a fielding error. Rodriguez settled in to pitch into the sixth, departing with two outs and a runner on. The inherited runner would eventually come in to score. The 33-year-old left-hander will take a 2.64 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, and a 92/45 K/BB ratio across 136 1/3 innings into a start against the Dodgers in Arizona on Sunday.
