    Reds released RHP Jermaine Vanheyningen.
The Reds signed the 23-year-old hurler to a minor league pact back in February. He wound up appearing in just nine games for the Reds Rookie League affiliate, posting a 5.23 ERA, 2.23 WHIP and 13/16 K/BB ratio in 10 1/3 innings of work. He’s an intriguing arm, but is still very raw and a long way away from potentially contributing at the big league level.

JJ Wetherholt collected three singles, a walk and a steal in the Cardinals’ 3-2 defeat of the Padres on Tuesday.
No other player on either team had even two hits in this one. Wetherholt has gone 18-for-50 in his last 13 games to raise his average from .234 to .259. There’s a long way to go, but he’s pretty easily the NL Rookie of the Year favorite over Sal Stewart and Nolan McLean at this point.
Gomez becoming trustworthy closer for Twins
Eric Samulski discusses Twins closer Yoendrys Gomez's recent performances on the mound, in which he's had two saves in his last three appearances and is turning out to be a reliable option in Minnesota's bullpen.

Andre Pallante threw seven innings of two-run ball and struck out six in a win over the Padres on Tuesday.
Pallante won for the third time in three starts this month. At 8-4, he has two more victories in 14 starts this year than he did in 31 starts last season. The biggest change from then is that he’s getting more called strikes this season, allowing him to amass a decent 19 percent strikeout rate even though he’s still not generating a bunch of whiffs. He still doesn’t project as a mixed-league guy going forward, but he’s a big reason why the Cardinals are in postseason position at the moment.

Riley O’Brien turned in a hitless ninth for his 18th save Tuesday against the Padres.
O’Brien walked one, but he was able to retire Fernando Tatis Jr., Jackson Merrill and Manny Machado in one of his better outings of late. It’s still the 13th straight inning in which he’s allowed at least one batter to reach, but it’s a little more job security for now.
  • SD Starting Pitcher #34
Michael King surrendered three runs in 4 1/3 innings and struck out only one in a loss to the Cardinals on Tuesday.
Although his velocity has held up just fine, King has given up 19 runs over 26 2/3 innings in his last five starts, with a particularly hideous 14/11 K/BB. That’s resulted in a drop in his overall strikeout rate from a fine 25.8 percent to a career-low 21 percent. We don’t want to write him off, but we also wouldn’t want to rely on him in a dangerous two-start week against the Braves and Dodgers next week.
  • SD Shortstop #2
Xander Bogaerts finished 0-for-4 in his third straight hitless game Tuesday versus the Cardinals.
Bogaerts didn’t miss any starts after leaving Saturday’s game following a beaning, but he’s 0-for-10 since the incident. Of course, it might just be a coincidence. He’d previously opened June with five straight hitless games, and he’s now 4-for-37 for the month.
  • PIT Left Fielder #10
Bryan Reynolds went 4-for-5 with two homers, three runs scored, and three RBI to lead the Pirates to a 6-5 win over the Athletics on Tuesday.
Reynolds had himself quite the day in Sacramento, starting with a base hit in the first inning. He then knocked another single and scored a run in the fourth before taking Jack Perkins deep for a solo homer in the sixth. Reynolds did it again in the seventh, taking Hogan Harris deep for a two-run blast. The 31-year-old outfielder is enjoying a bounce-back season, hitting .280/.400/.470 with 10 homers, 49 runs scored, and 45 RBI across 320 plate appearances.
  • ATH 3rd Baseman #20
Zack Gelof went 3-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored, and two RBI against the Pirates on Tuesday.
Gelof stepped into the box with the bases loaded in the first inning and gave the A’s an early lead with a bases-clearing single. After collecting another hit in the fourth, he took Mitch Keller deep for a solo homer in the sixth before drawing a walk and stealing a base in the eighth. The 26-year-old second baseman is hitting an excellent .286/.335/.500 with 10 homers, 34 runs scored, 28 RBI, and eight steals across 208 plate appearances.
  • PIT Relief Pitcher #31
Gregory Soto struck out two batters in a scoreless ninth inning to record the save against the Athletics on Tuesday.
Soto took the mound in the ninth inning to preserve a one-run lead against the Athletics. He worked around two hits, striking out two batters to secure the win for the Pirates with his 11th save to go with a 3.16 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, and a 37/12 K/BB ratio across 31 1/3 innings.
  • PIT Starting Pitcher #23
Mitch Keller allowed five runs -- four earned -- with seven strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings in a no-decision against the Athletics on Tuesday.
Keller loaded the bases on three walks in the first inning before Zack Gelof cleared them all with a base hit. Lawrence Butler followed with a double to make it a four-run first inning for the A’s. Keller settled in to pitch into the sixth before giving up solo homer to Gelof. That would do it for Keller, ending his day with one out in the sixth with seven strikeouts. The 30-year-old right-hander will take a 5.25 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, and a 65/31 K/BB ratio across 82 1/3 innings into a start against the Mariners in Pittsburgh on Tuesday.
  • ATH Relief Pitcher #50
Jack Perkins allowed three runs with six strikeouts over five innings in a no-decision against the Pirates on Tuesday.
Perkins held the Pirates scoreless through three innings, then gave up a run on two hits in the fourth. He then stranded two runners in the fifth before giving up a solo homer to Bryan Reynolds to lead off the sixth. The following batter would reach on a hit, and that would be the day for Perkins, departing at 85 pitches with six strikeouts. The 26-year-old right-hander will take a 6.15 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, and a 49/14 K/BB ratio across 41 innings into a start against the Angels in Sacramento on Sunday.
