The New York Post’s Jon Heyman reports Cubs RHP Marcus Stroman has opted out of his contract.
Stroman has elected to forego the $21 million remaining on the final year of his three-year, $71 million contract with the Cubs to test the open market this offseason. The 32-year-old ground-ball machine posted a solid 3.95 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 119/52 K/BB ratio across 136 2/3 innings (27 appearances, 25 starts) this past season for Chicago. He missed a month of action due to a rib injury, and also struggled in his final handful of appearances, but still owns a lengthy track record of success at the highest level, which should help his secure a long-term commitment.
