Rays acquired RHP Jackson Baumiester, INF/OF Mac Horvath and OF Matthew Etzel from the Rays for RHP Zach Eflin.
The 22-year-old right-hander was a second-round selection of the Orioles from the 2023 draft class. He has pitched fairly well in 18 starts at High-A Aberdeen this season — registering a 3.06 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and a 91/43 K/BB ratio across 70 2/3 innings. He was considered to be the 17th best prospect in the Orioles’ system according to MLB Pipeline.

Wilyer Abreu went 2-for-5 with a double on Wednesday against the Blue Jays.
As usual, the Red Sox’s offense was practically nonexistent here. They were shutout and his double was their only extra-base hit. While they’ve lacked consistency as a club this season, Abreu has been there through it all and performed. He’s missed just one game all season and has a .278 batting average and .770 OPS, but with just eight home runs and five stolen bases.
Yelich, Freeman hits lead best MLB bets
Pierre Andresen shares his favorites DraftKings picks for today's slate of MLB games, highlighting Sandy Alcantara's strikeouts thrown and hits for Julio Rodriguez, Christian Yelich and Freddie Freeman.
  • BOS Starting Pitcher #64
Jake Bennett allowed three hits and two runs with five strikeouts and didn’t walk a batter across 5 1/3 innings in a loss to the Blue Jays on Wednesday.
Bennett was fantastic here. Besides for a two-run third inning where he gave up a lead-off double and flare single that turned into two runs, was in complete control. His fastball command was excellent, living up at the letters and forcing six whiffs in the process. His changeup starred as well, forcing five whiffs of its own against the right-handed heavy Blue Jays’ lineup. A lanky lefty with great extension, an approach like this is the recipe for Bennett to find success. Next, we just need the Red Sox to leave him in past the 79 he was pulled with here. He’s scheduled for a difficult two-start week coming up though first in Coors Field against the Rockies and then back home against the Yankees.
  • SEA Center Fielder #44
Julio Rodríguez made an early exit from Wednesday’s game against the Orioles.
Rodríguez was replaced in center field to open the seventh inning after going 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored. The Mariners have been dealing with an avalanche of injuries and losing their franchise cornerstone for any amount of time would be disastrous. There should be an update on his status following the contest.
  • MIL Shortstop #91
Brewers SS prospect Jesús Made was removed from Wednesday’s game at Double-A Biloxi with a left quad contusion.
Made, the consensus top prospect in baseball, appears to have avoided serious injury following a collision with teammate Josh Adamczewski. The 19-year-old prodigy is hitting .276/.349/.427 with six homers and 21 steals through 59 games as one of the youngest position players in the entire Southern League.
  • NYY Shortstop #96
Yankees SS prospect George Lombard Jr. has been diagnosed with two sprained fingers on his throwing hand.
Lombard underwent imaging that didn’t reveal any fractures and isn’t facing an extended absence. The 21-year-old top prospect suffered the injury on a play at second base during Tuesday’s game at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He’s ready from a defensive standpoint to play in the majors already and has had a strong season at the plate, slashing .258/.387/.446 with eight homers and 12 steals in 287 plate appearances in the upper minors.
  • MLB Commissioner
The Athletic’s Evan Drellich reports MLB is altering the Home Run Derby to a swing-based format.
Nothing official from the league itself, but it sounds like the time-centered derby is dead. Drellich outlines that the revised format, which hasn’t been used since 2015, provides hitters with 20 swings in the first round and 15 swings for each of the semifinal and final rounds. Hitters get to continue on their final swing until they fail to homer. This year’s Home Run Derby will feature eight contestants at Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Park next month.
  • PIT Shortstop #85
Konnor Griffin (forearm) said Wednesday in a local radio interview with 93.7 The Fan that he’s progressed to flat-ground throwing from a distance of 150 feet.
Griffin added that he’s thrown on back-to-back days while experiencing no issues. The 20-year-old phenom hit the injured list back in late May after being diagnosed with a low-grade flexor muscle strain in his right forearm. The key variable here for fantasy managers is that Griffin has continued hitting while ramping up his throwing progression. He remains without a definitive return timetable, but it sounds like there’s optimism he’ll be back at some point in July.
  • CWS Relief Pitcher #15
Sean Newcomb was removed from Wednesday’s game against the Yankees with a left triceps contusion.
Newcomb was charged with three runs on three hits and recorded a pair of outs before being hit by a line drive during a fifth-inning relief outing at Yankee Stadium. The 33-year-old reliever appears to have avoided serious injury and is day-to-day moving forward.
  • MIL Starting Pitcher #23
Brandon Sproat was removed from Wednesday’s start against the Guardians with a right hamstring cramp.
Sproat was replaced by Chad Patrick just one batter after coughing up a grand slam to Daniel Schneemann in the fourth inning. He retired the first nine hitters he faced, striking out five of them, before melting down in the fourth. The 25-year-old continues to show brief flashes of dominance before his command ultimately falters and he implodes. That was the case in this one as he completely lost the feel for his fastballs, missed too many spots, and then hung a two-strike curve that Schneemann demolished. He’s obviously in jeopardy of missing his next start against the Reds on Monday. There should be some clarity on his status at some point in the next few days.

Cubs sent LHP Doug Nikhazy outright to Triple-A Iowa.
Nikhazy went unclaimed on waivers after being designated for assignment earlier this week. The 26-year-old lefty has yet to make an appearance for the Cubs after being claimed off waivers from the White Sox back in late April. He’ll remain stationed at Triple-A Iowa as organizational depth.
