Rays acquired RHP Ty Johnson, INF/OF Christopher Morel and RHP Hunter Bigge from the Cubs for INF Isaac Paredes.

Johnson, 22, was a 15th-round selection by the Cubs from the 2023 draft class. He has functioned primarily as a starter in his minor league career, but ultimately his path to the big leagues may be out of the bullpen. In 18 appearances (10 starts) between Single-A Myrtle Beach and High-A South Bend this season, Johnson has posted a 3.54 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and an 81/22 K/BB ratio across 61 innings of work.

Daulton Varsho

Daulton Varsho (wrist) remains out of the lineup for Wednesday’s series finale against the Phillies.

It doesn’t really make any sense for Toronto to send Varsho to the injured list at this point since he’s already sat out five straight contests. The expectation is that he’ll be ready to return for Friday’s series opener against the Yankees after missing time with a lingering left wrist issue. It’ll be Myles Straw in center field on Wednesday night at the Rogers Centre.

Konnor Griffin

Konnor Griffin (forearm) resumed throwing on Wednesday.

Griffin told reporters afterwards that he felt fine while throwing at roughly three quarters intensity. The 20-year-old rookie sensation is facing a lengthier absence than originally anticipated after hitting the injured list with a forearm strain back on May 31. It’ll likely take him a couple weeks to ramp up a throwing progression before he’s cleared to return to game action on a minor league rehab assignment, but he remains without an official return timetable for now.

Colt Emerson

Colt Emerson (back) remains out of the lineup for Wednesday’s contest against the Orioles.

The encouraging development here is that Emerson was able to resume swinging a bat and is optimistic he’ll avoid a trip to the injured list. The 20-year-old top prospect is sitting out his third consecutive game due to back tightness with Cole Young drawing another start at shortstop. Emerson is presumably day-to-day heading into Thursday’s series finale in Baltimore.

Nick Fortes

Nick Fortes went 4-for-4 with two doubles and three runs scored as the Rays held off the Red Sox 7-5 on Wednesday.

Fortes couldn’t quite muster a homer, with 406- and 399-foot flies both going for doubles, but it was still quite a day. It’s the second time in 454 major league games that he’s managed four hits and the seventh time that he’s scored three runs. He had seven hits in all in the series against Boston, raising his OPS from .585 to .664.
