First baseman Will Simpson was picked up by the Rays from the A’s in a five-player trade.

Sampson, a 15th-rounder in 2023, hit .282/.378/.482 in a 2024 season spent mostly at high-A Lansing. The A’s gave him a bit of a look at third last year, but he seems pretty well locked in at first, and unfortunately for him, he’s on his way to an organization with two clearly better first base prospects in Xavier Isaac and Tre’ Morgan.

Spencer Torkelson belted his 11th home run of the season on Friday night, but it wasn’t enough to power the Tigers past the Guardians.

Torkelson tagged Tanner Bibee for a 416-foot (105.9-mph EV) solo shot to center in the eighth inning that made it a one-run game at 3-2. That would be his lone hit in three at-bats on the evening. For the season, the 26-year-old slugger is now slashing .213/.312/.417 with the aforementioned 11 long balls and 28 RBI.

James Outman went 1-for-3 and walloped a solo home run in a losing effort against the Guardians in his Tigers’ debut on Friday.

Outman started in center field and batted ninth for the Tigers on Friday night. He made a great impression in his first at-bat, launching a 2-2 sinker from Tanner Bibee for a 418-foot (107.5-mph EV) solo shot that pulled the Tigers to within a run at 2-1. That would be as close as they would get though. Perhaps a change of scenery is just what Outman needs to turn things around.

Trent Thornton

CHC Relief Pitcher #49

Cubs activated RHP Trent Thornton from the paternity list.

Thornton had been away from the club since Tuesday as he welcomed a new addition to the family. The 32-year-old righty has been exceptional since joining the Cubs on May 6, registering a 1.69 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and a 6/7 K/BB ratio over his 16 frames.

Tyler Ferguson

CHC Relief Pitcher #64

Cubs optioned RHP Tyler Ferguson to Triple-A Iowa.

The 32-year-old right-hander was just recalled on Tuesday, but he’ll head back to Triple-A with Trent Thornton returning from the paternity list. Ferguson posted a 16.88 ERA, 2.63 WHIP and a 4/2 K/BB ratio over 2 2/3 innings with the Cubs.

Shohei Ohtani

LAD Starting Pitcher #17

Dodgers’ manager Dave Roberts told reporters on Friday that he’s hopeful Shohei Ohtani (knee) will be able to return to the lineup on Saturday.

Ohtani did undergo imaging on his knee which revealed nothing more than normal wear and tear. Roberts noted that it won’t be a situation where Ohtani needs to go on the injured list and that he’ll return on Sunday if he doesn’t on Saturday. It sounds like fantasy managers and Dodgers’ fans can rest easy here.

Jack Flaherty

DET Starting Pitcher #9

Jack Flaherty was removed from Friday’s start against the Guardians due to left leg discomfort.

Flaherty was seen talking to the trainers and the coaching staff after finishing the third inning, then he went into the tunnel and never returned. Flaherty gave up two runs on three hits and a walk while striking out one batter in his three innings of work. It doesn’t sound like anything that should cause him to miss his next start, but it’ll depend on how he’s feeling over the next few days.

Chase Dollander

COL Starting Pitcher #32

Rockies transferred RHP Chase Dollander to the 60-day injured list.

Nothing has changed in the prognosis for the 24-year-old hurler, who still has yet to resume throwing, this was done as a procedural move to clear a spot on the club’s 40-man roster for Sean Sullivan. There’s still no clear timeline for when Dollander may be able to return.

Rockies optioned LHP Sammy Peralta to Triple-A Albuquerque.

The Rockies needed to clear a spot on their active roster for the arrival of Sean Sullivan on Friday and unfortunately Peralta drew the short straw this time around. The 28-year-old southpaw holds a 10.13 ERA, 1.88 WHIP and a 4/2 K/BB ratio over 2 2/3 innings with the Rockies this season.

Sean Sullivan

COL Starting Pitcher

Rockies selected the contract of LHP Sean Sullivan from Triple-A Albuquerque.

The 23-year-old hurler will start for the Rockies on Friday night against the Athletics in West Sacramento in what will be his MLB debut. Sullivan made 11 starts at the Triple-A level this season, posting an unsightly 5.60 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and a 50/19 K/BB ratio over 54 2/3 innings. He can be ignored for fantasy purposes.

Max Fried

NYY Starting Pitcher #54

Max Fried (elbow) will throw off a mound on Saturday for the first time since landing on the injured list.

Yankees’ skipper Aaron Boone told reporters on Friday that Fried had recent imaging done that showed increased healing in his balky pitching elbow. It’s still going to be a slow progression for the 32-year-old southpaw as he ramps back up, but the fact that he’s getting on the mound again is obviously an encouraging sign.
