It wasn’t long ago that McGough was a favorite for saves in Arizona, but not even two years later, he pitched to an 11.57 ERA in spring training and will not make the team. Mancini is the tougher cut here since the veteran slashed .440/.481/.640 in 27 spring plate appearances with one home run. As a non-roster invitee, other teams will have a chance to offer him a spot on their roster or Mancini will decide whether to take a minor league assignment with the Diamondbacks organization.

Montgomery did walk two batters, but he didn’t allow a hit and struck out two batters on his 29 pitches. Montgomery has not allowed a run since July 26th, which is now a 21 2/3 inning scoreless streak with a 36/6 K/BB ratio. He has a 2.67 ERA and 14th saves on the season and has become an elite, young closer.

Griffin came into today just 9-for-46 since coming back from a finger injury on September 4th. He had just two RBI combined in his previous 11 games with an 11/2 K/BB ratio, so this could be a good step in the right direction as the rookie looks to end the season on a high note.

Naylor drilled a solo home run in the eighth inning to get the Brewers within one run. He also accounted for another run on a fielder’s choice earlier in the game. The 26-year-old is hitting just .154/.214/.275 on the season, but he may get a few more starts down the stretch with the Brewers wanting to rest William Contreras more often ahead of the playoffs.

Urquidy can help cover for Jesús Luzardo’s absence, but he won’t be postseason eligible after getting picked up this late. He had a 4.37 ERA over 22 2/3 innings in six appearances for the White Sox. The Phillies moved Caleb Kilian to the 60-day IL to open up a spot on the 40-man for him, and they’ll need to send someone down once he reports to the team.

It sounded like Kilian might make it back during the regular season, but this rules it out. He’s been out since suffering an oblique strain on Aug. 9.

Harrison didn’t allow a run in the first inning, despite giving up a double to Bryan Reynolds, and then got the first two outs in the second before things unraveled. He gave up a walk, an infield single, and a catcher’s interference, and then the wheels really fell off. He gave up atwo-run double, an RBI single, then hit a batter, walked a batter, and hit another batter before being removed from the game. He threw just 58 percent of his pitches for strikes and posted a 10 percent swinging strike rate. In his last four outings, Harrison has allowed 21 earned runs on 27 hits in nine innings. The Brewers may need to make other postseason plans.

Tucker came up just a triple shy of the cycle, and he has never actually hit for the cycle in his career. In September of last year, he came a double shy of hitting for one against the Marlins. Tucker’s first-inning home run off Brady Singer was his 16th of the season to go along with 69 RBI. He came into this game hitting .193/.300/.369 in 52 games in the second half. He hasn’t been striking out, and he has a 7.2 percent barrel rate over that timeframe, so maybe he can get it going before the playoffs begin.

Muncy drove in two on a fourth-inning double that gave him 73 RBI on the season. He came into this one hitting just .239/.352/.435 in September with three RBI and a 17/6 K/BB ratio. He also had only one multi-RBI game since August 21st, so perhaps this gets him going a little bit.

Stewart clobbered a solo shot off Blake Treinen in the fourth inning for his 32nd home run and 109th RBI on the season. He has a .271/.339/.477 slash line and seems to be en route to winning NL Rookie of the Year. He’s been one of the few bright spots for the Reds in a disappointing season.

He also walked four and didn’t strike out a single batter while throwing just 55 percent of his pitches for strikes and registering just a five percent swinging strike rate. It was a poor outing overall for Singer, who allowed three extra-base hits, including a home run, and gave up runs in three of the four innings he pitched in. He’ll take a 5.67 ERA into his final start against Atlanta next week.
