Pennington will head to Triple-A Norfolk as extra organizational relief depth after being claimed off release waivers from the Rangers. The 27-year-old southpaw made 16 relief appearances last year between the Rangers and Royals in his shot at the highest level.

After going his first 44 career games without one, Susac has three homers in two days. If not for the sudden surge, he probably wouldn’t have been in line to start more than one of the next three games with the Padres throwing right-handers the rest of the weekend. However, this could earn him some extra time at Drew Cavanaugh’s expense.

Ray’s likely final start for the Giants was a very good one, as he struck out six and walked one while allowing only three singles and a double. He’s now 6-0 with a 1.09 ERA in his last eight starts. His 41/21 K/BB in 49 1/3 innings during the stretch isn’t nearly as impressive, but with the way his groundball rate has ticked up, he should be pretty attractive to contenders.

Caleb Kilian and Dylan Smith set him up with scoreless frames, with Smith getting the hardest assignment of the trio against the top of the order in the eighth. Not that he’s especially likely to be moved, but Miller is adding to his trade value with his late-inning success. This makes eight straight appearances in which he’s entered in the eighth or the ninth, and he’s thrown 8 1/3 scoreless innings with 12 strikeouts during the span.

Sears gave up seven hits, including Daniel Susac’s two-run homer in the second. He’s now 3-4 with a 4.26 ERA in six starts and one relief appearance. He could start again Tuesday against the Diamondbacks, but it’s probably not a lock.

Vásquez outpitched starter JP Sears tonight as he tries to find his way back into the San Diego rotation. He’s allowed three runs in 11 innings over four appearances since coming off the IL on July 19. Since he threw 65 pitches tonight, he probably won’t be available again until Monday at the earliest.

The sac fly was hit 399 feet and would have been a homer if Fernando Tatis Jr. didn’t make a nice jumping catch. Devers also had a 102-mph lineout to center in the ninth tonight. Meanwhile, his three hits checked in at 93, 70 and 50 mph. The last of those was a successful bunt against a shifted infield.

Contreras homered immediately after Wilyer Abreu tied the game with a solo shot off Luis Medina. It was his 23rd of the year, putting him one away from matching his career high from 2019. He’s tied for 13th in the majors in homers, tied for 15th with 67 RBI and is in fourth place with his .945 OPS.

The Red Sox didn’t take their first lead until the eighth, but that still worked out for Gray, who picked up his 13th win of the year. He’s tied with Cristopher Sánchez for the major league lead in the category, and he’s just one away from matching his career high of 14, which he set in his first full season in 2014 and matched in 2015 and again in 2025. He’ll face the White Sox next week.

Chapman very nearly gave up a game-tying homer to light-hitting Alika Williams, but the 406-foot shot to center bounced off the wall for a double. It was farthest Williams had ever hit a ball in 321 major league plate appearances. Chapman went on to strand the runner by striking out both Colby Thomas and Nick Kurtz. It was Chapman’s second straight appearance and third in four days, so if the Red Sox have a save chance on Friday, it figures to go to Garrett Whitlock.

All of the runs came in the fifth after a leadoff HBP and three groundball hits, only the first of which was a hard-hit ball. The big blow, a two-run double by Ceddanne Rafaela, could have at least been knocked down by Tommy White at third, even if it wasn’t turned into an out. Barnett allowed just one hit and one walk prior to the fifth. His ERA increased tonight, but it was a solid showing that should help his chances of getting another start. Whether that happens right away will probably hinge on J.T. Ginn’s availability as he looks to return from the IL next week.
