Sung-Min Song is expected to play multiple positions in his Padres debut.
“Wherever we can get his bat in the lineup, that’s what we’re going to try to do. And we want to find a spot for him where he can be productive for the Padres, and there’s a lot of different places that I think he can fit,” newly-minted Padres skipper Craig Stammen told reporters earlier this week. He also mentioned the possibility that Song, who officially signed a four-year, $15 million contract, could get some work in the outfield, which is something he didn’t do during his playing career in Korea where he mostly played third base the past few years. The 29-year-old appears primed for a versatile super-utility role, which slightly increases his appeal for fantasy purposes, especially in deeper mixed leagues. He’s a challenging hitter to forecast but projecting double-digit homers and steals doesn’t seem outlandish.
