Joe Ryan allowed four hits and one run with two walks and seven strikeouts across 6 2/3 innings in a 4-1 win against the Yankees on Wednesday.
Ryan’s line was sterling, but he was a bit fortunate to only allow the four hits and one run given the amount of hard contact the Yankees made against him. Of their 17 total balls in play, 11 were hard-hit and it was shocking they couldn’t string more hits together. They zeroed in on Ryan’s fastball as he lost the feel of secondaries throwing his splitter, slider, sweeper, and curveball a combined 33% of the time. It says a lot about his growth as a pitcher to not have anywhere close to his best stuff and stand up to this stout Yankees’ lineup though. He’s scheduled to face the Athletics at home in his next start.
