Baldelli is out as Minnesota’s skipper following a calamitous 70-92 campaign that included an ugly 23-43 second-half record following a trade deadline fire sale. The 44-year-old skipper, who had his club option for next season picked up back in mid-June, went 527-505 (.511) during his seven seasons at the helm dating back to 2019. He guided the Twins to the postseason three times and took home three NL Central division titles during his tenure.

Volpe certainly made the most of his return to the Bronx on Thursday. He smacked an RBI single off of Ryan Feltner in the second inning that increased the Yankees’ lead to 3-1. He also swiped third base before being stranded there. Volpe then delivered a 352-foot (104.0-mph EV) grand slam off of Jimmy Herget in the seventh inning that made it a 10-2 ballgame. With his three-hit attack, the 25-year-old infielder is now slashing .251/.333/.349 with just two homers, 24 RBI and eight stolen bases in 198 plate appearances with the Yankees this season.

García got the Yankees’ offense started in the opening inning with a 413-foot (103.7-mph EV) two-run shot off of Rockies’ right-hander Ryan Feltner. It’s the first time in his career that the 26-year-old infielder has eclipsed the 30-homer plateau. He’s in the midst of an unbelievable offensive campaign, slashing .287.319/.553 with 30 homers, 91 RBI and five stolen bases in 499 plate appearances between the Nationals and Yankees.

Jones did his damage during a six-run uprising in the seventh inning, with his two-run single extending the Yankees’ lead to 6-2. He then rode home on Anthony Volpe’s grand slam. With his three-hit evening, the 25-year-old slugger is now hitting .255/.333/.452 with nine homers, 33 RBI and nine stolen bases in his first 235 plate appearances with the Bombers.

Fried punched out seven batters on the night. While the poor command didn’t lead to any trouble, it did lead to Fried needing 80 pitches (48 strikes) to record 10 outs, which is why he was yanked in the middle of the fourth inning. The lone tally against him came on a solo homer by Kyle Karros in the second inning. The 32-year-old southpaw will look to bounce back as he totes a 2.73 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and a 94/31 K/BB ratio (99 innings) into Tuesday’s matchup against the Twins in Minneapolis.

Karros got the Rockies on the board in the second inning of this one, crushing a 3-1 fastball from Max Fried for a 431-foot (109.1-mph EV) solo shot. He struck out in each of his other three plate appearances in the contest, finishing the night 1-for-4. On the season, the 24-year-old is now slashing .261/.355/.426 with 11 homers and 45 RBI.

The right-hander walked one batter on the evening while punching out two. He served up a two-run homer to Luis Garcia Jr. in the opening frame, then the Yankees added on two more against him in the second inning. He finished his day with three scoreless frames, but the damage had already been done. Feltner got nine swings and misses on 83 pitches on the day, registering a CSW of 23 percent. Now 5-10 on the season, he’ll carry a 5.88 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and an 83/49 K/BB ratio (111 2/3 innings) into Tuesday’s matchup against the Padres.1283

Seabold, 30, has been shelved since the beginning of July due to a right lat strain. He’ll need at least a couple of tune-ups in a minor league setting there before he’s cleared to return to the Royals’ bullpen. Before landing on the injured list, he had posted a 5.25 ERA, 1.71 WHIP and a 20/11 K/BB ratio over 24 innings of work.

Matthews has been sidelined since suffering a left knee sprain just before the All-Star break. He has finally made tangible strides in his recovery though and should only need a weekend’s worth of games in the minor leagues before he’s an option to rejoin the Astros.

With Austin Martin (hamstring) returning from the injured list on Thursday, Gonzalez gets squeezed off of the Twins’ active roster once again. The 22-year-old outfielder went just 2-for-8 (.250) with a pair of runs scored in his limited action with the Twins.

Martin has been shelved since August 16 due to a left hamstring strain. Prior to landing on the injured list, the 27-year-old was hitting .241/.352/.333 with three homers, 23 RBI and 12 stolen bases in 335 plate appearances. Gabriel Gonzalez was optioned to Triple-A St. Paul in a corresponding move on Thursday.
