The Baltimore Banner’s Andy Kostka reported that Yennier Cano has gotten rid of his changeup and replaced it with a splitter.

This could be a change to help unlock more strikeout upside for Cano. In his 208 2/3 MLB innings, he has just a 23.2 percent strikeout rate, which is well below average for a late-inning reliever. The splitter adds more depth and drop, which could be useful for Cano, whose changeup ran in on right-handed hitters similarly to his sinker. The splitter could play well off the four-seam fastball and give him more swing-and-miss.

Max Muncy

Max Muncy (wrist) is not in the lineup for Saturday’s game against the Brewers.

The positive news is that X-rays came back negative for any fractures after Muncy was hit by a 95-mph sinker off his right wrist during Friday’s series opener. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters afterwards that he’ll receive a couple days off to rest and recover, but it sounds like he managed to avoid serious injury. It’ll be Santiago Espinal taking over at third base this weekend.

Jordan Walker launched a two-run homer and tallied three RBI to lead the Cardinals to an 8-1 win over the Reds in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader.

Walker took Reds reliever Connor Phillips deep with a no-doubter to right-center field in the seventh inning to give the Cardinals a commanding 5-1 advantage during the opening contest of Saturday’s twin bill. He also picked up an additional RBI with a third-inning ground out. The 24-year-old’s impressive breakout campaign continues as he’s tied for second in the National League with 14 round-trippers this season.

Bryan Torres

STL Center Fielder #39

Bryan Torres went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer on Saturday against the Reds in his major-league debut.

Torres made quite a statement in his big-league debut following 11 seasons in the minors between three different organizations. The 28-year-old journeyman collected his first career hit with a single to right field against Reds starter Chris Paddack in the third inning before taking reliever Jose Franco deep in the ninth inning for his first home run.

Andre Pallante

STL Starting Pitcher #53

Andre Pallante gave up one run over six innings on Saturday in a win over the Reds.

Pallante took the ball for the opening contest of Saturday’s doubleheader and managed to limit Cincinnati to just a second-inning solo homer by Nathaniel Lowe, retiring the final 13 batters he faced. The 27-year-old righty struck out three and allowed just one run. He’s allowed three earned runs or fewer in eight of his 10 starts this season. He’ll face the division-rival Cubs his next time out on Friday.

Chris Paddack

CIN Starting Pitcher #56

Chris Paddack allowed three runs over five innings on Saturday in a loss to the Cardinals.

Paddack drew the starting assignment for the opening contest of Saturday’s twin bill and managed to save the Reds bullpen by completing five frames. He posted five strikeouts and issued three walks. He’ll continue to draw starts for Cincinnati’s injury-depleted rotation and is in line to take the ball on Friday against Atlanta.

Yordan Alvarez

HOU Designated Hitter #44

Yordan Alvarez made an early exit from Saturday’s game against the Cubs.

Not good. Alvarez appeared to be dealing with some sort of physical issue since he drew a visit from Astros manager Joe Espada and a trainer prior to his sixth-inning at-bat. He fouled off one pitch before being lifted for pinch-hitter Zach Dezenzo. He was 0-for-2 with a walk and a run scored prior to exiting. There should be an update on his status shortly.

Genesis Cabrera

KC Relief Pitcher #92

Royals signed LHP Génesis Cabrera to a minor league contract.

Cabrera latches on with Kansas City as organizational relief depth after being cut loose by the Phillies last week. The 29-year-old southpaw has made 312 appearances in the big leagues between the Twins, Pirates, Cubs, Mets, Blue Jays and Cardinals since 2019.

Peter Strzelecki

NYY Relief Pitcher #44

Yankees signed RHP Peter Strzelecki to a minor league contract.

Strzelecki fortifies New York’s relief depth at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He was up briefly with the Brewers earlier this month but didn’t end up getting into a game. The 31-year-old has made 77 appearances between the Brewers, Diamondbacks and Guardians since 2022.

Spencer Schwellenbach

ATL Starting Pitcher #56

Spencer Schwellenbach (elbow) has started a throwing progression.

Schwellenbach will remain limited to flat-ground throwing for a couple weeks before he’s cleared for a bullpen session. The 25-year-old has been on the shelf since undergoing surgery to remove bone spurs from his pitching elbow back in mid-February. He won’t be an option for Atlanta’s rotation until the second half of the year. However, it’s a positive sign that he’s been cleared to resume throwing.

A.J. Puk

AZ Relief Pitcher #33

A.J. Puk (elbow) threw a scoreless inning on Saturday in a minor league rehab appearance in the Rookie-level Arizona Complex Leauge.

Puk made his return to game action for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery last year. The 31-year-old southpaw will need a couple weeks of rehab appearances before he’s ready to rejoin Arizona’s high-leverage mix. It’s theoretically possible he’ll get a chance to work the ninth inning on occasion but it seems like Paul Sewald is going to remain the Diamondbacks closer for now.
