Diamondbacks’ manager Torey Lovullo told reporters on Monday that Corbin Carroll (hand) will return to Cactus League action at some point this week.

Carroll is making quick work of his recovery from surgery to repair a broken hamate bone. There will be questions about whether or not his power returns right away following the procedure, but at this point it looks like the dynamic 25-year-old outfielder should be in the Diamondbacks’ starting lineup on Opening Day.

Cade Horton

Cade Horton left his start Friday because of right forearm discomfort.

That was not what we wanted to hear. Horton was removed after signaling to the dugout following his 17th pitch of the game against the Guardians. The Cubs won’t want to take chances with their 24-year-old, so he’ll probably go on the IL even if they get good news from here. Colin Rea could replace him in the rotation, with Javier Assad perhaps being called up to pitch in middle relief.

Astros placed INF Isaac Paredes on the bereavement list.

He’ll be absent for at least three games, with Shay Whitcomb coming up to replace him. Assuming that Jeremy Peña is ready to play full-time again after being in a reduced role due to his finger injury, he’ll start at shortstop and Carlos Correa will go back to third base. Paredes is 5-for-22 with four doubles and five RBI through six games.

Ben Rice

NYY 1st Baseman #22

Ben Rice went 2-for-5 with a homer and three RBI as the Yankees beat the Marlins on Friday.

Rice did his work on the Marlins bullpen, launching a solo home run to the short porch off Michael Petersen and adding a two-run double off the top of the wall in right center in the bottom of the eighth. Rice, who also managed to challenge a strikeout pitch that wasn’t even close to the edge of the plate early in the game, is hitting .409/.500/.864 with two homers and eight RBI in the early going. Our advice: Keep swinging.

Xavier Edwards

MIA Shortstop #9

Xavier Edwards went 2-for-4 with a home run in Miami’s loss to the Yankees on Friday.

It took Edwards until July 12 to hit his first home run last year, so good of him to get it out of the way early. He bludgeoned a Will Warren four-seamer 377 feet for a homer to right field in Yankee Stadium. Off to a .423/.444/.577 start in 26 plate appearances, the power wasn’t what we thought we were buying in Edwards, but as he has just one stolen base thus far, every little bit helps.

Will Warren

NYY Starting Pitcher #29

Will Warren allowed two solo home runs in 5.2 innings as the Yankees bested the Marlins on Friday.

He struck out six and didn’t walk anybody. Warren did leave with a couple of ducks on the pond, but Tim Hill came on to strand both and keep Warren’s shot at a win alive. Warren’s fastball velocity dropped a bit today, down to 93.6 mph from a 94.7 average in his first start. The Yankees will remain a great environment to chase wins with, but we’re not seeing much of a step forward yet from Warren, who despite the early-season 2.70 ERA has remained fairly hittable.

Aaron Judge

NYY Right Fielder #99

Aaron Judge went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and 3 RBI as the Yankees clobbered the Marlins 8-2 on Friday.

Judge’s 387-foot moonshot off Eury Pérez quickly swung an early Marlins lead back to the Yankees, and he also drew a bases loaded hit by pitch to force in another run in the second inning. It was Judge’s first multi-hit affair of the season, and though we can’t predict the future, we’re confident saying it won’t be the last after he hit .331 last season. Fantasy managers can continue to enjoy the ride.

Eury Pérez

MIA Starting Pitcher #39

Eury Pérez walked six Yankees in four innings on Friday, allowing four earned runs.

Pérez was simply wild. He only allowed four hard-hit balls -- though one of them was a monster Aaron Judge blast -- but walked in a run with the bases loaded, hit Judge with the bases loaded to force in another run, and allowed three stolen bases along the way. We’re still excited about Pérez despite the shaky outing, and he averaged 98.3 mph with the fastball today. He simply needed to land more of them in the zone today.

Cade Horton

CHC Starting Pitcher #22
Cade Horton left Friday’s game in the second inning with an undisclosed injury.

Horton, who pitched a scoreless first, appeared uncomfortable after throwing a 93.8 mph fastball, his slowest of the game. It wasn’t obvious what exactly was wrong, but we’ll find out soon enough. Colin Rea replaced him against the Guardians and would be the favorite to join the rotation if Horton lands on the IL.

Shay Whitcomb

HOU Left Fielder #14

Astros recalled INF/OF Shay Whitcomb from Triple-A Sugar Land.

Whitcomb was hitting .308/.333/.577 with two homers and two steals in six Triple-A games, though he had struck out 10 times already. Perhaps he’ll get a start against a lefty while Isaac Paredes is on the bereavement list.

Riley Greene

DET Left Fielder #31

Riley Greene went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI against the Cardinals on Friday.

After leaving the season-opening series against the Padres with just one hit, Greene has mustered six hits in his last four games, adding four RBI and three runs scored. The ball hasn’t gone over the fence yet, but Greene’s double was the hardest-hit ball of the game (111 mph off the bat) and he added a 409-foot flyout against Gordon Graceffo in the ninth that would have been a homer in 11-of-30 parks. Greene looks just fine to us.
