Jacob provides San Diego with a fresh bullpen arm for the next couple days until the club needs to bring up Matt Waldron to replace an injured Nick Pivetta (elbow) in the rotation. The 27-year-old righty has made 39 appearances in the big leagues since 2023.

Scherzer threw a bullpen session Friday. He pitched five scoreless innings for Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday, but since that took him only 56 pitches, the thinking was that he’d make one more rehab start. If he’s activated, it would likely be to face the Nationals on Monday. Spencer Miles would be put back in middle relief, but that might be very temporary with the Blue Jays seemingly in line to sell at the deadline.

Rodón would likely face hitters once or two before beginning what should be a fairly brief rehab assignment. He’s been on the IL since July 3 with elbow inflammation.

The thinking was that Friday’s game might be Acuña’s last before being activated from his hamstring strain, but it was rained out and will made up as part of a doubleheader on Saturday. Acuña could play in both games then before rejoining the Braves, and it that happens, he’ll likely get Sunday off before being activated Monday.

The Rangers thought Wednesday that Jung might be ready to play tonight, but now an IL stint seems possible. A decision on that will likely come Saturday. If Jung goes on the IL, the Rangers will likely bring back Josh Smith.

It took longer than anticipated, but Glasnow is finally making progress in his recovery from a back issue that has had him shelved since early May. He’s still at least a couple of weeks away from a potential return to the Dodgers’ rotation, but at least he’s taking strides in that direction.

He’ll make one final minor league rehab appearance at Triple-A Oklahoma City on Sunday and if all goes well, he’ll rejoin the Dodgers’ bullpen early next week. Tanner Scott will get a few additional days to hold down the closer’s role in his absence.

It remains to be seen whether Barger will get the full Tommy John procedure or the internal brace procedure instead. Either way, he’s going to miss the remainder of the 2026 season and most of the 2027 season as well while recovering.

It’s a rare off-day for the versatile 30-year-old who has become a fixture in the middle of the Twins’ lineup this season. Royce Lewis will slide over and cover second base in his place on Friday night while Victor Caratini starts at first base and will bat sixth for the Twins.

Jung was pulled from Tuesday’s battle against the White Sox due to tightness in his left calf and hasn’t played since. There haven’t been rumblings about the oft-injured third baseman requiring a trip to the injured list just yet, but if this lingers for another couple of days the Rangers may be forced to rethink that. Ezequiel Duran will start in his place at third base and bat third for the Rangers against Mariners’ right-hander Bryce Miller.

Mangum was a late scratch from the nightcap of Wednesday’s doubleheader due to soreness in his right foot. It appears to have been just a minor issue though and he’s right back in center field and batting atop the Pirates’ lineup on Friday evening against Cubs’ left-hander Matthew Boyd.
