Jack Perkins will start Friday’s series opener against the Astros.

It’s unlikely to be a lengthy outing since Perkins has sparingly worked beyond two innings as a reliever this season. The 26-year-old showed some promise as a rookie last year and holds a respectable 4.73 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 70/25 K/BB ratio across 66 2/3 innings in the majors since 2025. He’s in line for a challenging road matchup at hitter-friendly Daikin Park as he transitions into the rotation. A wait-and-see approach seems preferable for fantasy purposes, but he’s an intriguing arm to monitor in deeper leagues.

Pirates optioned RHP Isaac Mattson to Triple-A Indianapolis.

With Camilo Doval set to join the Pirates’ bullpen on Sunday someone needed to get the boot and it looks like Mattson drew the short straw this time around. The 31-year-old right-hander holds a 4.93 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and a 33/16 K/BB ratio over 34 2/3 innings in 36 appearances with the Pirates this season.
Wood was 'ecstatic' to start Futures Game
Gage Wood lets his intense demeanor on the mound do the talking, but the Phillies' No. 2 prospect was left nearly speechless after learning he would draw the start at the 2026 All-Star Futures Game.

Pirates optioned OF Billy Cook to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Cook, 27, has struggled at the dish in his limited action with the Pirates this season, slashing a woeful .200/.200/.267 with zero homers and two RBI in 45 plate appearances. He’ll continue to serve as extra outfield depth at the Triple-A level.

Pirates activated INF Spencer Horwitz from the 10-day injured list.

Horwitz had been sidelined since late June due to a hamstring strain and then suffered a concussion while on his rehab stint that cost him some additional time. His return should provide a nice boost to the Pirates’ offense. Billy Cook was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis in a corresponding move on Sunday.

Jesús Sánchez is not in the Blue Jays’ starting lineup for Sunday’s series finale against the Cardinals.

Sánchez returned from the injured list on Friday and has now sat in two consecutive games with opposing left-handers on the hill. It looks like he’ll be used exclusively in that strong-side platoon role with Myles Straw continuing to take his place against southpaws.

Eugenio Suárez is not in the Reds’ starting lineup for Sunday afternoon’s divisional showdown against the Pirates.

It looks to be just a routine day off for the 35-year-old slugger. Ke’Bryan Hayes will start in his place at the hot corner and will bat ninth for the Reds against Pirates’ right-hander Mitch Keller on Sunday afternoon in Cincinnati.

Guardians optioned LHP Will Dion to Triple-A Columbus.

The Guardians needed to free up a spot in their bullpen for the arrival of Craig Yoho on Sunday and unfortunately for Dion he was the odd man out this time. The 26-year-old southpaw has made 12 appearances with the Guardians this season, posting a 4.58 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and a stellar 25/3 K/BB ratio over 19 2/3 innings. He should get another opportunity with the big league club before the summer is through.

JJ Wetherholt is not in the Cardinals’ starting lineup for Sunday’s matinee against the Blue Jays.

It appears to be nothing more than a routine day off for the dynamic 23-year-old rookie second baseman who has been a fixture atop the Cardinals’ lineup for nearly every game this season. Jose Fermin will start in his place and will bat seventh against Blue Jays’ right-hander Max Scherzer on Sunday afternoon in Toronto.

Braves recall RHP JR Ritchie from Triple-A Gwinnett.

As expected, with Reynaldo López (knee) landing on the injured list, the Braves bring back Ritchie with the expectation that he’ll start on Sunday against the Nationals. The 23-year-old hurler has registered a 4.50 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and a 49/33 K/BB ratio across 54 innings in 13 appearances (seven starts) for the Braves this season.

Braves placed RHP Reynaldo López on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to July 30, with left knee inflammation.

Lopez was scratched from his scheduled start on Saturday due to the injury and will now be shelved for at least a couple of weeks. JR Ritchie was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett in a corresponding move on Sunday.

Cubs sent RHP Andrew Wantz outright to Triple-A Iowa.

Wantz was designated for assignment on Wednesday after allowing six runs over 3 2/3 innings in a pair of appearances for the Cubs. He passed through waivers unclaimed and will report to Triple-A Iowa where he’ll continue to serve as extra pitching depth.
