Oh, so that’s why Detroit DFA’d Jake Rogers. The Tigers started both of their catchers tonight, with Dillon Dingler serving as a DH, and Valencia, who was recalled Monday, hit his third and fourth homers in just seven games (four starts) as a major leaguer. True, the second one tonight was hit off Chadwick Tromp, but this still an awfully impressive start. He’s the first player to have four hits and two homers in one of his first seven career games since Jose Siri in 2021 and second since Danny Espinosa in 2010.

Melton’s 23.1 percent strikeout rate isn’t overwhelming, but he’s been about as effective as any pitcher in the majors since joining the Detroit rotation two months ago, going 6-1 with a 1.75 ERA in 67 innings over 11 starts. Regression will surely come at some point; he could well remain an above average starter, but the stuff seems shy of ace quality. He’s a really good bet again next week, though, as he’s due to face the Mariners in Seattle.

It feels like a precautionary move, but that’s purely speculation at this juncture. Guerrero will undergo further evaluation to determine the severity of the situation after being lifted for a defensive replacement in the fourth inning. He finished 1-for-2 at the plate. There should be an update on his status prior to Wednesday’s series finale at Nationals Park.

Caminero tripled in the lone run of the game for the Rays with his first three-bagger of the year. The double was the 18th of 2026, and his slugging percentage improves to .550 in the process. Caminero has now driven in 64 runs in 2026, and has quickly — but not necessarily surprisingly — established himself as one of the best power-hitting hitters in baseball.

The win puts an end to the Marlins’ 12-game losing streak. Alcantara was brilliant; scattering four hits allowed — just one for extra bases — and he struck out five while issuing just one walk. It’s the fourth time in five starts in July that the 30-year-old has been able to go at least seven innings, and it lowers his ERA for the month to a solid 2.57. Overall, Alcantara is now up to 11-6 on the season with a 3.82 mark in 2026, and he’ll look to go deep again Sunday in a scheduled bout against the Mets in New York.

Not great. It’s the same hip issue that’s been bothering Buxton for most of the season. The 32-year-old franchise cornerstone was 0-for-2 prior to being replaced in center field by Luke Keaschall in the fifth inning of this one. Buxton has graded out as a top-15 fantasy outfielder this season, slashing .263/.320/.544 with 57 runs scored, 25 home runs, 45 RBI and seven steals in 82 games. Any sort of extended absence would be a massive hit for the Twins as they try to stay in playoff contention. He’ll undergo further evaluation, and possibly an MRI, to determine the severity of the issue. There should be additional clarity on his status prior to Wednesday’s contest.

Bader will undergo additional imaging, including an MRI, to determine the extent of the damage as a result of the accident, according to a team statement. The 32-year-old was already on the injured list recovering from plantar fasciitis that put him on the shelf back in late May. There should be an updated return timetable at some point this week, but Bader’s return doesn’t appear imminent.

There were scouts from multiple teams in attendance, according to MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo. Holmes hit 94 mph on his fastball and struck out four while scattering three hits and a pair of walks during the 59-pitch outing. The 33-year-old should be an attractive trade target for contending teams searching for rotation help at next week’s trade deadline. He’ll likely make his next start in the majors, either with the Mets or somewhere else, later this week.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters Smith is finally asymptomatic after dealing with a lingering neck issue since early June. The 31-year-old is likely to require a couple weeks to ramp up from a physical standpoint following the extended layoff. He remains without a definitive return timetable, but it seems reasonable to anticipate Smith making it back to Los Angeles at some point in August.

No word yet regarding how much time Schmitt will miss, but he’s facing an extended absence. There’s a strong possibility that his season is over. It’s an unfortunate development for the Giants, and fantasy managers, as Schmitt’s breakout campaign comes to a screeching halt. He hits the shelf after batting .271/.301/.483 with a career-high 21 homers, 55 RBI and nine steals in 409 plate appearances, delivering top-10 caliber fantasy production at both second and third base this season. The 27-year-old suffered the injury while pulling up awkwardly after rounding first base during Monday’s game at Oracle Park. There should be a definitive return timeline at some point, but fantasy managers shouldn’t anticipate him returning with just over eight weeks left in the season.
