Abusing the Default Rankings

Being in an online draft room is a completely different experience than drafting in a room full of friends or other owners. One of the biggest differences for those who are operating in the online room is the influence that the site they’re drafting from can subconsciously have on their draft by how their players are ranked. This can have an impact on even the best fantasy owners, causing them to go off-script and adjust their initial game plans.

For those familiar with this piece, the goal is simple. We’re taking a look at where the top-notch fantasy analysts for each of the four major fantasy host sites (Yahoo!, ESPN, CBS Sports and NFL.com) have players ranked and running them against ADP and the field of the other sites so that you can use those default player rankings to your advantage on whichever respected site you are drafting from. The edge here is finding which players you covet most and when you can craft them into your draft plans, which players have a potential opportunity to wait longer on and find value, as well as those who are priced higher than other outlets.

Yahoo!

Overall Takeaway

Yahoo is the only of the main sites that is set right in the middle with a .5 PPR default setting for skill guys. That hasn’t impacted their rankings greatly among running backs and wide receivers. The other main difference between Yahoo and the other sites is that their default penalty for interceptions thrown is -1 point, saving you a point in comparison the other sites. This shouldn’t have a dramatic overall impact, but Yahoo is easily the site that has given quarterbacks the most weight. Aaron Rodgers has his highest overall ranking (35th) here compared to 39 at CBS, 54 at NFL and 59 at ESPN (he’s 56 in our ranks). You can follow this down the line at the quarterback position and they are valued highly at Yahoo. They especially have the mid-level quarterbacks all much higher than their peers. Someone such as Jimmy Garoppolo is ranked 73rd overall on Yahoo while his next lowest rank of the main-four sites is 117 over at CBS. If you’re someone who prefers to wait on the quarterback position, you may have to jump into the pool of players quicker than expected, but all this does is push more quality positional players down the board for you to pillage.

Here’s where I’m layering in my own spin on things compared to years past. For each site, we’re looking at which players they have ranked within the first 10 rounds of a 12-team league and sorting out the players that they have ranked at least one full round over their current average draft position in relation to their default scoring. These are the guys you’ll have to be leery about having someone jumping the line for you on based on the site rankings if they are targets of yours.

  • The reception-based wideouts here are the early-round guys that you’ll have to target ahead of average cost. Larry Fitzgerald is the first guy you’ll have to target ahead of ADP as Yahoo has him at 22, but everyone (including us) outside of CBS (38) has him as a top-25 option at the wide receiver position. He’s a consensus value. The same can be said for Demaryius Thomas, Golden Tate and Jarvis Landry. They are both ranked by all of the sites above average cost.

  • Corey Davis is a popular breakout selection for many, but Yahoo is the site in which you’ll have to pay the most attention if you want to grab him. He’s ranked 56th overall here in comparison to CBS (79), ESPN (63) and NFL (67) while we’re the lowest of all at 86th overall.

  • The same can be said for Jamison Crowder, who has by far his highest ranking on Yahoo. He’s player 70 in Yahoo ranks while he more closely resembles his ADP on the other sites.

  • The other positional area where Yahoo is much higher than the field is a few members of the tweener-tight end field that comes off the board in drafts after the locked in TE1 options are gone. All of George Kittle, Jack Doyle, O.J. Howard and David Njoku hold their highest rank on Yahoo compared to field. Doyle is close to a few other sites, but the big gaps are with the upside guys mentioned alongside of him. Kittle holds an 8th-round rank on Yahoo while not ranking higher than 120 on any other site. Howard is at 108 here with a high of 153 elsewhere.

Taking a look at things inversely, these are the players with top-10 round ranks where Yahoo ranks at least a full round lower than the average cost. These are the players you can run more of a leash on when pressing the market and can take below cost.

  • We’ve yet to find out what will happen with LeSean McCoy’s alleged domestic dispute, but Yahoo has dropped him severely. His rank of 52nd overall is widely the lowest of everyone, ahead of the next lowest (CBS at 36).

  • Yahoo has also penalized Julian Edelman’s four-game suspension the most, even more than CBS and NFL, who operate under standard default scoring. His 107 rank here is the lowest of all the outlets and a potential bargain as Edelman has scored double-digit points in 70.8 percent of his games over his past three seasons played.

ESPN

Overall Takeaway

ESPN is the only full-PPR default main site and their rankings take that into full accountability. Wide receivers almost unanimously have their highest rank on ESPN. In turn, pass-catching running backs are elevated as well. Christian McCaffrey has highest rank (18) here, joining Duke Johnson (80) while non-pass catching backs such as Jordan Howard (38) and Derrick Henry (50) have their lowest ranks here.

ESPN has a much longer list than that of Yahoo, so we won’t run through everyone here, but there’s a much larger field of players you may have jump the gun on over average cost if they are draft targets of yours.

  • At the front of drafts, ESPN has little to no fear on the status of Josh Gordon as he’s valued squarely at the end of the third round.

  • You also have to pay a tax on your favorite ancillary backs on ESPN. Chris Carson and Devontae Booker are in competition to open as their team’s starting running backs but have a ranking well over a round where you can typically grab them. We also mentioned the PPR boost in effect, but even ESPN is ahead of the PPR market on all of Giovani Bernard, Theo Riddick and James White by over two rounds compared to their average cost in reception-based scoring.

  • Despite the PPR format, Marshawn Lynch carries his highest ranking on ESPN with a sticker value in the late 5th-round, nearly two full rounds over his current cost in the format. If you’re looking to build on his end of the season run last season as a potential value, you’re going to have to jump the line.

  • Royce Freeman also has his highest rank (mid-4th-round) here despite Booker also being valued much higher than drafters.

CBS

Overall Takeaway

CBS is the first site we’ve reached that is standard scoring for default purposes (their draft room does adjust their rankings based on their projections to your league’s scoring format although it skews to a VBD-based model). That format change immediately shows up in their standard rankings as there’s a heavy differential in the value of running backs to wide receivers and backs who make their fantasy pay in the passing game. Here, wideouts are significantly depreciated with lows coming across the board for players that are reception driven. Players such as Larry Fitzgerald (38), Jarvis Landry (58) and Golden Tate (61) have their lowest ranks in the industry to go along with lows for Christian McCaffrey (32), Tarik Cohen (103), Duke Johnson (106), and Chris Thompson (125). If you want backs here, you’re going to have to pay more than you would in standard leagues elsewhere.

  • Despite being driven towards the running back position, CBS is locked in on T.Y. Hilton returning to the production he had when he last played with Andrew Luck. Hilton’s ADP should rise as August closes, but you’ll need to get into the middle of the 2nd-round to match their rankings.

  • Without the need for receptions, Alex Collins has his highest ranking across all of the sites, 10 spots higher than fellow standard site NFL and five spots ahead of our standard ranks.

  • With the tide rising for all backs, CBS is by far the highest on rookie running backs Ronald Jones and Kerryon Johnson. Johnson is the standout here as staff rankers have Johnson at RB32 with a 6th-round price tag while the next highest site has him at 84th overall.

  • If Jamaal Williams is your favorite Green Bay running back, CBS is blowing up your opportunity to wait long for him. Coming in at 53 overall, his ranking dwarfs his next highest rank, which is 83rd overall at NFL.

  • Another standout is Trey Burton, who you would figure would be impacted by the lack of reception inflation but has his highest ranking by a full round over the industry and two rounds over drafters, despite two of those sites rewarding those catches.

  • If you’re keeping score so far, this is the third time in three sites -all with different scoring- that the industry has ranked Robby Anderson well ahead of his current cost. NFL.com is the only one of the four sites that doesn’t have him a full round above that cost, making him nearly a consensus screaming value compared to where lands in drafts across formats.

  • Another player the industry is much higher on than drafters is Kenny Stills as he shows up here in a nearly identical spot (90th overall) as he did in the full-PPR ranks of ESPN. That full-PPR rank was 31 picks higher than his ADP, but has an even wider gap here, with a full four rounds of separation from his average cost.

  • Spinning the CBS ranks to use to your advantage, these are the players who have a full round of difference compared to their average cost.

  • CBS is another site that should afford you to wait longer on the tight end position, ranking nearly that entirely secondary tier of tight ends lower than where they are being selected. In the case of Jordan Reed, CBS is factoring in his injury-filled the most, ranking him lower than any other site.

  • Receivers are depressed at CBS, but Devin Funchess is two rounds off of his price point on CBS while his next lowest rank is 91st overall on NFL.com.

  • Another player they aren’t buying a rebound from is Jordy Nelson. Nelson has his lowest ranking across the board here, a full round lower than his next lowest rank (100) from Yahoo.

The NFL site is also built around a default standard scoring system, but their rankings aren’t as pronounced as CBS’ standard ranks given the format. Here you’ll still find that the players that typically receive a boost by stacking receptions are still treated neutrally.

  • Similar to Yahoo, Larry Fitzgerald is the first player that you’re going to have to get out in front of ADP on given where he is ranked on NFL. He’s a full round higher than his rank in the other standard ranks on CBS (38), but we here agree with the NFL on this one as Fitzgerald checks in at 26 overall in our standard ranks.

  • For the third time in a row, Royce Freeman makes the list of players you’ll have to be ready to pounce on higher than normal given the average cost. Fantasy owners are drafting Freeman with some doubts of him returning starting RB value while sites are pushing him higher than what the market is paying. For what it’s worth, we’re the lowest of all sites on Freeman and have him at 76 overall in standard, more in line with the public.

  • Even with receptions not being a factor, Jordan Howard is the first early-round option you have a shot to get a bargain on. Standard owners are taking him at the back of the second round, but he is ranked as an end of the third-round value.

  • This is the lowest that Brandin Cooks is ranked across all sites as you may be able to land him in the sixth-round in drafts over at NFL as opposed to the early fifth-round cost drafters are paying.

  • The player that opened the door for Cooks joining the Rams, Sammy Watkins also has by far his lowest rank at NFL. We’re the next lowest in stand at 79 overall, a full round of difference while Watkins is a round and a half off the market price.

Overall Takeaway

Even though we aren’t a site that hosts leagues and drafts, what would we be without a little self-reflection? For those that don’t know, our staff ranks are a composite from six of our analysts. Since our base rank is for PPR scoring, we’ll use those. Our PPR ranks are more similar to those of ESPN, with weight given to the actual wide receiver position having value in the format over typical ADP. We have five wide receivers worth first-round sticker prices. Using those ranks, let’s take a look at some of the guys we are higher and lower on by a full round than the market that you may circle in your upcoming drafts that you can then apply to the specific site you’re drafting at.

  • Randall Cobb has gained a lot of steam from the industry as the summer has moved on, but we’re huge fans of his value. Only ESPN has Cobb ranked higher than us.

  • Doug Baldwin cracks the list as we universally had him as a WR1. Given his preseason injury and unknown timetable, look or him to slide down in ranks and ADP over the upcoming weeks.

  • Rounding out the biggest gap in our ranks versus ADP are a trio of Patriots. Given our own Evan Silva’s undying affection for Rex Burkhead, it’s no surprise to see him as the largest potential value. We’re also very bullish on Chris Hogan and still find Julian Edelman to be improperly discounted given his four-game suspension.

  • There’s a long list of players we’re lower on than the market by over a full round. Many are ones we’ve touched on from other sites, but our biggest gaps in the opening few rounds steam from running back costs, mostly from those who have an ADP with upside overly cooked in.

  • I’m personally very high on Joe Mixon, but the other staffers here are sobering up his rank. As someone who steadily highlights that drafting is something you’re not going to consistently beat over a long period of time, it’s wise to consider that you can’t always try to beat the field. Doing so can and will result in a lot of losses, especially with high draft capital. We have Mixon with an early third-round sticker price.

  • The same can be said for a few pass catchers as we’re a little more cautious on the pending breakout for Corey Davis and the unknown availability of Josh Gordon. We’re also not completely all-in on Trey Burton, Will Fuller and Jimmy Garoppolo at their respective pricing, other players with inherently small sample sizes and still a risky floor.

  • That floor potential also ties into some players returning from injury. We’re lower than the market on Greg Olsen, Jordan Reed and Andrew Luck while very low on Ty Montgomery and D’Onta Foreman compared to the market. Luck may be a guy that creeps up as we move along these final few weeks, so stay posted.
