NBC Sports’ Matt Maiocco reports the 49ers interviewed former Chargers HC Brandon Staley for their defensive coordinator vacancy.

Before taking the job as the Chargers head coach in 2021, Staley served as the Rams’ defensive coordinator in 2020 and also has experience as a DC at the college level. Interestingly, Staley interviewed with the Rams earlier this offseason for their defensive coordinator opening after Raheem Morris left for Atlanta, but they instead promoted LBs coach Chris Shula, to the role. Staley’s defense struggled during his time with the Chargers, never ranking better than 21st in points allowed per game. In addition to Staley, the 49ers also interviewed Nick Sorenson, who is an internal candidate currently serving as their defensive pass game coordinator.

Bears ruled out Kyle Monangai (thumb/toe) for Week 7 against the Patriots.

Monangai will miss his third game in a row this week. Exactly two weeks ago, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that Monangai’s turf toe injury would be an issue for 1-2 weeks. Technically, his statement remains accurate. This week’s Thursday Night Football game complicates things. If the Bears thought Monangai would miss four games, they likely would have put him on injured reserve, so he should, theoretically, be able to play in Week 8 against the Seahawks. Of course, nothing is guaranteed, and for those wondering, the Bears go on bye in Week 10. D’Andre Swift and Roschon Johnson have been splitting touches with Monangai sidelined. We do not yet know if Johnson will be punished for last week’s fumble though.
What Rams WR will make up for the loss of Adams?
With Davante Adams missing between 6 and 10 weeks with a hamstring injury, Patrick Daugherty and Denny Carter discuss what other Rams' wide receivers could be good fantasy roster replacements.

AJ Dillon (ankle) returned to practice Wednesday.

Dillon didn’t practice last week and was ruled out on Friday. He should be good for Week 7, barring a setback in practice. Dillon will back up Chuba Hubbard, though Trevor Etienne could also see a few snaps.

Bryce Young (knee) is practicing in full for Week 7 against the Bucs.

It’s the first time we’ve seen Young o the injury report with this knee issue, though a full practice today is nothing to worry about. He will be good to go for his date with the Bucs. Young is currently the QB4 by fantasy points per game. Even if he does cool down this week, Young should be in most starting fantasy lineups.

Raiders coach Klint Kubiak said Dont’e Thornton (hamstring) has “got to go show us something” in the final week of his 21-day practice window.

This is rough. Currently on injured reserve, Thornton began practicing in Week 5, activating his 21-day practice window. The young wide receiver told reporters that he was “overly confident” in his hamstring and is “ready to play.” Two weeks later, the team has not yet officially removed him from injured reserve. Per Kubiak, Thornton “had a good first week, had a good second week,” but he still has to go “out there to practice to show us that he’s ready.” He’s been practicing in full for two weeks. The fact that the wide receiver-needy Raiders have not yet activated him is not encouraging. Thornton does not need to be stashed in 12-team leagues at this time.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reports the Commander hired Steve Wilks “to work with the defensive coaches.”

Wilks won’t be with the Commanders on game days and the team will likely consider him an advisor. Per Garafolo, the decision to hire Wilks was made a month ago and he joined the staff last week. Wilks had been serving as a special assistant at Appalachian State. His last stint in the NFL was as the Jets’ defensive coordinator in 2025.

Sauce Gardner (calf) did not practice Wednesday.

Gardner is considered week-to-week because of the calf strain he suffered in Week 6. He’s not expected to miss an “extended period”, but it’s safe to assume Gardner is out for Week 7. Maybe that will help kickstart the Vikings’ sluggish passing attack, though we doubt it.

Christian Darrisaw (concussion) resumed practicing on Wednesday.

Darrisaw suffered a concussion in Week 4 against the Dolphins and was unable to play in Week 5 against the Saints. The Vikings were on bye in Week 6, giving him more than two weeks to get ready for Week 7. We expect to see him practicing fully this week.

T.J. Hockenson (concussion) resumed practicing on Wednesday.

Hockenson was ruled out in Week 5 against the Saints after suffering a concussion. The Vikings were on bye in Week 6. The extended absence gives Hockenson decent odds of practicing in full this week, and we expect that to be the case. An update will be provided if he is limited today. Hockenson developed a strong connection with Kyler Murray in Week 4, and warrants TE1 treatment in Week 7 against the Colts.

Tyler Warren (groin) did not practice Wednesday.

Warren suffered a groin injury during Friday’s practice last week. He was listed as questionable for Sunday’s game. Though he was reportedly considered a game-time decision over the weekend, the Colts shut him down on Sunday. A DNP today suggests he will miss at least one more game. Keenan Allen led the Colts with eight catches for 82 yards last week. He remains an unfortunately viable PPR scam as long as Warren is out versus the Vikings.

David Montgomery (groin) was not seen practicing on Wednesday.

We were told early last week that Montgomery is week-to-week. Today’s absence suggests he is still week-to-week and will likely be ruled out again on Friday, though we do not know that for sure. We will provide an update before then if his status changes. In the meantime, Woody Marks will get the start again this week, potentially with less touch competition. Jawhar Jordan totaled 50 yards and a touchdown on seven total touches last week, but was surprisingly placed on injured reserve today. Dare Ogunbowale remains a receiving factor, though.
