  • FA Offensive Coordinator #4

CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones reports the Seahawks interviewed Byron Leftwich for their offensive coordinator vacancy.
Leftwich, who has been out of the league for two seasons, interviewed with the Patriots for their head coach opening earlier this month. Now, the former Buccaneers offensive coordinator could once again find himself calling plays, only this time for the Seahawks. Leftwich’s work with the Buccaneers from 2019-2022 resulted in a Super Bowl title during the 2020 season, and an offense that ranked in the top five in scoring in three of those four years. The Buccaneers’ offense bottomed out in Leftwich’s final season with the team, but it’s hard to overlook the decline in play we saw from Tom Brady in that final season. During his four years as Tampa Bay’s OC, the team ranked sixth in EPA per play and offensive success rate while boasting the third-highest early-down pass rate. Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald seems to be looking for a coordinator who will steer the team in a more balanced approach. It seems unlikely that Leftwich would fit that mold, but it’s possible I’d be willing to change up his philosophy with Geno Smith under center and two solid backs in Kenneth Walker and Zach Charbonnet.
  • PHI Tackle #65

Eagles RT Lane Johnson told the Philadelphia Inquirer that “four or five” players on the team were dealing with illnesses.
Defensive tackle Jalen Carter missed Wednesday’s practice with an undisclosed illness, and rookie Quinyon Mitchell is reportedly dealing with laryngitis. In addition to Johnson, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio also mentioned multiple players dealing with illnesses, but none are expected to miss Sunday’s game as a result. These illnesses will likely prove to be little more than a footnote on Super Bowl weekend when all is said and done, but it is worth noting as we draw closer to game day.
  • KC Punter #14
Matt Araiza (illness) was added to Thursday’s injury report.
The Eagles’ Jalen Carter isn’t the only player at the Super Bowl dealing with an illness, as players on both sides appear to be dealing with whatever is going around The Big Easy. Araiza, despite being listed with an illness was a full participant on Thursday and does not appear to be at risk of missing Sunday’s game.
  • KC Wide Receiver #24
Skyy Moore (abdomen) was limited in Thursday’s practice.
Moore has a chance to be activated off of injured reserve in time for the Super Bowl, but even if he is activated, his contributions are expected to be minimal. Moore has now been limited in back-to-back practices to start the week. We’ll likely know his availability before the weekend.

CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz reports the Raiders are expected to hire Saints DC Joe Woods to their defensive staff.
Woods joined the Saints in 2023 to serve as their defensive coordinator and has also made stops as a coordinator with the Broncos (2017-2018) and the Browns (2020-2022). Woods has twice coached a defense that ranked in the top five in yards allowed per game and had the Saints ranking 13th in yards allowed and eighth in points allowed in 2023. Things bottomed out for the team last season, but last year’s struggles are due more to organizational failures. Woods’ role with the Raiders hasn’t been clearly defined, but regardless of what it is, he should provide a good veteran presence to the Raiders’ organization.
  • NO Wide Receiver #16
Bub Means’ rookie season was derailed by a setback in his recovery from a high-ankle sprain.
Means produced an intriguing three-game stretch in Weeks 6-8, catching 9-of-14 targets for 118 yards and one touchdown after slowly working his way into the wide receiver rotation. He unfortunately suffered a high-ankle sprain in Week 8 and later experienced a setback in his recovery that prevented him from retaking the field in 2024. The speedy receiver has a chance to earn the Saints’ No. 3 wide receiver role this summer and is reportedly now back at “full speed,” ostensibly having put the medical issue behind him.
  • PHI Quarterback #1
FOX Sports’ Mike Pereira believes the NFL and the competition committee could reconsider banning the “tush push” this offseason.
Pereira is a former official and once served as the league’s vice president of officiating. Now serving as FOX Sports’ rules analyst, Pereira believes the repeated offsides we witnessed in the NFC Championship Game ahead of an Eagles “tush push” could spur the league to reconsider banning the play this offseason. It’s worth noting that while Pereira is no longer involved in the league’s rulemaking, he is likely aware of the discussions taking place regarding things of this nature. Speaking on Thursday, Pereira said, “I think what happened in the championship game was ugly...I think with the ugliness of that, they’ll take a further look at it.” He noted that the referees threatening to award the Eagles with a touchdown if the Commanders continued to jump offsides in the NFCCG could only add to the argument to ban the play. The league has debated whether or not there’s a place in the game for the Eagles’ signature play since they first introduced it in 2022. After surviving two off-seasons of debate, we’ll see if the latest criticism of the play results in a ban ahead of the 2025 season.

Bills hired Ryan Nielsen, formerly of the Jaguars, as a senior defensive assistant.
The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman is the first to report the hiring. After being one-and-done as the Jaguars defensive coordinator, Nielsen now lands with the Bills as an assistant to Sean McDermott and his staff. Nielsen is now on his fourth team in four seasons after previously working with the Saints, Falcons, and Jaguars. In addition to his experience as a defensive coordinator, Nielsen has also worked as a defensive line coach at the college and pro game dating back to 2005 when he was hired to Ole Miss’ staff.
  • Bears owner Virginia McCaskey died on Thursday at 102 years old.
The oldest child of Bears founder/owner George Halas, McCaskey’s passing comes a month after her 102nd birthday. The principal owner of one of the oldest franchises in the league, McCaskey oversaw two Super Bowl-winning teams during her tenure and was the oldest owner in all major American sports following Ralph Wilson’s passing in 2014. She passes away as the longest-tenured owner in the league after inheriting the Bears following her father’s death in 1983. McCaskey’s son, George McCaskey, has served as the Bears’ Chairman since 2011 and has since been the second-highest ranking member of the organization. He will presumably step into an ownership role following his mother’s passing.
  • NYJ Front Office
Jets hired Rick Spielman as a senior football advisor.
It’s a notable role for Spielman, who made the announcement on his With the First Pick podcast on Thursday. Spielman, who served as the Vikings’ general manager from 2012-2021, helped oversee the hiring process for Jets head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey and will now provide assistance to both hires in his new role. Spielman helped the Commanders hire general manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn last off-season but will now have allegiance only to the Jets for at least the 2025 season.
  • SEA Defensive End #99
    Seahawks restructured Leonard Williams’ contract.
According to Seahawks beat writer Corbin Smith, the team converted $18.745 million of Williams’ 2025 salary into a bonus while tacking on two void years to the end of his deal. The move freed up just over $14 million in cap space for the Seahawks, who will still need to make additional moves to get under the cap before the start of next season. Williams is coming off one of his best years as a pro after totaling 64 tackles, 11 sacks, and a career-high 16 TFLs in 2024.
