Beginning off No. 10 tee, World No. 521 Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño authored a 3-under-par 34-34=68 in the weather-delayed second round of the Andalucia Valderrama Masters to post 4-under 138, up 14 spots to T3, six shy of countryman and leader Sergio Garcia.
Were it not for Garcia’s unconscious 64, Fdez-Castano’s 68 would have shone through more, yet, it was tied for the second-best lap (with two others) on another dreary day in Sotogrande, Spain. He totaled six for the good with three drops, but walked off on a high with birdie-3 at 9. The 39-year-old, who celebrated his birthday seven days ago, is a 7-time winner on the European Tour in 251 events, most recently the 2013 BMW Masters. He kicked off with 70 (4 birdies, 3 bogeys) after checking in at 125th in the Race to Dubai standings. The Spaniard has recorded one top 10 this season in 14 starts, a T4 at the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters back in February.
