In Group 14 action on Friday at the WGC-Dell Match Play, 25-seed Kevin Na outlasted top-seed Joaquin Niemann 1 UP is his scheduled match, and then defeated alternate and 64-seed Maverick McNealy with birdie from 13'5" on the first playoff hole.
Na (2-0-1) advances out of group play for a third time in nine visits, his best finish thus far a T5 two tries ago in 2019, where he won Group 15 as the 57th- and lowest-seed (2-1-0) before losing in the quarters on Saturday afternoon to Francesco Molinari 6&5. Today, he tripped Niemann (1-2-0) at the wire with birdie-3 at the last from 5'6", and sent WGC first-timer McNealy packing in the playoff, McNealy never getting a chance to stroke his par putt after having tree trouble off-the-tee. Na, the second-seed in the pod, moves on to tomorrow’s Round of 16, where he’ll face 24-seed and reigning TOUR Rookie of the Year Will Zalatoris (2-1-0), who prevailed out of Group 3 in extra time over 3-seed Viktor Hovland.
