Francisco Pena had a nice night at the dish in Friday’s 11-0 Cactus League stomping of the Dodgers, going 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles and two RBI.
The 31-year-old backstop plated a pair of runs with double off of Clayton Kershaw in the second inning that increased the A’s early lead to 3-0. He then doubled again leading off the fourth inning and eventually came around to score on an RBI single by Elvis Andrus. Pena has been good in his limited action this spring, hitting .417 (5-for-12) with a homer and five RBI. He provides the A’s with plenty of extra depth behind the plate.

Athletics signed C Francisco Pena to a minor league contract.
He’ll earn $600,000 if he makes the major league roster. The 31-year-old Pena hasn’t appeared in the majors since 2018 with the Cardinals, but he’ll give the Athletics some nice veteran depth going into spring training.

The 30-year-old spent his 2019 season at the Triple-A level, slashing an impressive .290/.327/.547 with 17 homers and 50 RBI in only 74 games between Triple-A Memphis and Triple-A Sacramento. It’s a nice depth signing for the Reds.

Francisco Pena (oblique) will return to Grapefruit League action Saturday.
Pena has been sidelined for the last week and a half with an oblique strain. He’s competing with Matt Wieters for the backup job behind Yadier Molina.

Francisco Pena (oblique) will likely be ready to return to game action in 4-5 days.
Pena has been in shutdown mode since suffering an oblique injury last Tuesday. These sort of injuries often sideline players for weeks at a time, so it sounds like the Cardinals believe this one is minor. Either way, the 29-year-old figures to be on the outside looking in for a roster spot with Matt Wieters set to back up Yadier Molina.

Francisco Pena will be shut down for the next 10-15 days due to an oblique injury.
Pena suffered the injury during a seventh-inning at-bat in the Cardinals’ Grapefruit League loss to the Phillies on Tuesday. He was already facing an uphill battle to make the Opening Day roster in St. Louis. Yadier Molina will serve as the club’s starting catcher for the 15th consecutive season, with recent free agent addition Matt Wieters backing him up.
