Indians prospect Giovanni Soto was hammered by the Reds in his spring debut on Friday, allowing five runs on three hits and a pair of walks in only 2/3 of an inning.
The 21-year-old lefty was acquired by the Tribe in July of 2010 when Jhonny Peralta was dealt to the Tigers. He posted a 3.93 ERA and 1.32 WHIP over 22 starts at Double-A Akron in 2012, while fanning 100 in 121 1/3 innings. He has an electric arm, but is still very raw and has to improve his command before he’s a candidate to join the big league roster.

Athletics claimed LHP Giovanni Soto off waivers from the Cubs.
Soto was designated for assignment by the Cubs over the weekend when Kyle Schwarber was activated from the 60-day disabled list. The 25-year-old posted a 5.14 ERA over 33 relief appearances with the Cubs’ Triple-A affiliate this season. He pitched in six games with the Indians in 2015.

Cubs designated LHP Giovanni Soto for assignment.
The move clears a roster spot for Kyle Schwarber, who has moved his rehab to the Arizona Fall League in hopes of returning for the World Series (if the Cubs make it). Soto spent all of 2016 at the Triple-A level, compiling a disappointing 5.14 ERA over 33 outings for Iowa. The 25-year-old made six relief appearances for Cleveland in 2015.

White Sox claimed LHP Giovanni Soto off waivers from the Athletics.
This will be his third organization in the last three weeks. Soto spent the 2016 regular season with the Triple-A affiliate of the Cubs, posting a 5.14 ERA and 1.67 WHIP in 49 innings. He seems doubtful to win an Opening Day bullpen spot next spring with the Pale Hose, but a big firesale on the south side of Chicago could certainly change things.

White Sox optioned LHP Giovanni Soto, RHPs Chris Beck, Tyler Danish, and Brad Goldberg, and OF Willy Garcia to Triple-A Charlotte; optioned C Alfredo Gonzalez to Double-A Birmingham; reassigned LHP Aaron Bummer and RHP Blake Smith to minor league camp.
And so, the prospect of Giovanni Soto throwing to Geovany Soto in a regular season game will have to wait. At least for now. Soto, who was claimed off waivers from the Athletics back in November, will serve as bullpen depth in Triple-A.

White Sox sent LHP Giovanni Soto outright to Triple-A Charlotte.
He’s now off the 40-man roster. Soto was a relatively early cut this spring.

White Sox released LHP Giovanni Soto.
Soto lost his 40-man roster spot just before the season and now is out of the organization altogether. He held a 5.33 ERA over 16 relief appearances at Triple-A Charlotte.

Giovanni Soto is expected to be called up Friday.
Soto has a cool 2.68 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, and 51/29 K/BB ratio in 53 2/3 innings this season at Triple-A Columbus. The 24-year-old lefty will get some work in mid-relief. Michael Martinez is also being called up, for infield depth.

Soto made six appearances with the Indians last season and posted a 2.68 ERA and 51/29 K/BB ratio over 53 2/3 innings at the Triple-A level. The 24-year-old figures to make his way back to the majors at some point in 2016.
