Alabama Golf Courses - Best in State

274235.ashx

Since taking the helm in 2002, Seawell has brought the Alabama mens golf program to new heights. He played an integral role in the 2004 opening of the Jerry Pate Golf Center, the first Alabama-owned practice facility in program history. Seawells hard work immediately paid dividends as his Crimson Tide earned a berth in the 2005 NCAA Championships for the first time in nine seasons. Before Alabama, Seawell coached at Anderson College (1991-1998) and Augusta State University (1998-2002). He also was a member of the University of South Carolina golf team.

Ol’ Colony Golf Complex
Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Year opened: 2000
Course type: Public
Price: $46
Architect: Jerry Pate

Seawells take: Our home course at the University of Alabama. A great Jerry Pate layout. Is a true public course but you would never know it by the design or conditions. One of the most fun courses you will ever play. A great test but very fair.

The Shoals Golf Club (Fighting Joe)
Muscle Shoals, Ala.

Year opened: 2004
Course type: Public
Price: $70
Architect: Robert Trent Jones

Seawells take: It is by far the best piece of property in Alabama. It is located on the Tennessee River and the views are spectacular. It has a back tee that equipment has not caught up to yet. It measures over 8,000 yards. You will not catch me back there.

Kiva Dunes
Gulf Shores, Ala.

Year opened: 1995
Course type: Public
Price: $97
Architect: Jerry Pate

Seawells take: Located right on the gulf coast, the winds play a major factor. They seem to blow from a different direction every time you play.

Birmingham Country Club
Birmingham, Ala.

Year opened: 1916
Course type: Private
Architect: Donald Ross

Seawells take: This Donald Ross layout has withstood the test of time. Its a course that drives college players crazy. They think they should shoot nothing, but the many hidden obstacles keep scores from being low.
