Senior Irene Cho tied USC records for wins in a season and career while junior Catalina Marin and sophomores Paola Moreno and Dewi-Claire Schreefel joined her in the top 10 as the No. 6 Women of Troy won the 2006 NCAA Women’s Golf Central Regional at Texas A&M’s Traditions G.C., in College Station, Texas, on Saturday (May 13).

USC, which needed just to finish among the top eight of 21 teams to qualify for the NCAA Championships, posted a two-stroke victory over top-ranked Duke and was 20 shots ahead of third-place No. 7 Pepperdine. The Women of Troy had a three-day total of 883 (293-304-286, +19), erasing a three-stroke deficit to Duke from the start of the day.

Cho won the individual title with a 214 (-2) after turning in a final-round 69 (-3). She won by four strokes over Duke’s Amanda Blumenherst and was seven shots ahead of third-place Blue Devil Elizabeth Janagelo.

Cho’s win was her fourth of the season, tying Mikaela Parmlid’s USC record. Cho’s win is her fifth of her career, also tying Parmlid’s career mark. Her round of 69 was also her eighth sub-70 of the season, again a USC-season best.

Marin and Schreefel finished tied for sixth at 223 (+7), a season best for Marin and a season-best tie for Schreefel. Schreefel’s final-round 71 also tied a season-best, equaling rounds from October and September. Marin wrapped up her play with her second straight 73 for her third top 10 finish of the season.

Moreno finished tied for ninth with a 224 (+8), finishing play with her second 73 of the tournament. It marked her fourth top 20 finish in the last five events.

Junior Veronica Felibert rounded out Troy’s performers with a 234 (+18).

USC, seeking its second NCAA team title to complement its first from 2003, will play in its ninth straight NCAA Championships at the Ohio State Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio, May 23-26.
