Right on schedule, Tom Lewis is now a professional. The English amateur standout announced he has turned pro in a statement released by his new representation at IMG.
“‘I am very excited to get out there and see how I measure up,” Lewis said.
The 20-year-old fired an opening round 65 to lead the Open Championship in July at Royal St. George’s. It was the lowest round ever recorded by an amateur in the Open.
He became the first amateur since 1968 to lead the game’s oldest major after 18 holes and first since 1972 to lead any major as an amateur after the first round.
Lewis won the silver medal as the low amateur at the Open, finishing in 30th place. This month, he represented the victorious Great Britain & Ireland team in the Walker Cup at Royal Aberdeen with a record of 1-2-1.
