Though currently ranked among the top 10 players in the world, Louis Oosthuizen may sit out the season’s second major due to the birth of his child.
Oosthuizen’s wife, Nel-Mare, is pregnant with the couple’s third child and is currently scheduled to deliver on June 15 – which also happens to be the day of the third round of the U.S. Open. Currently seventh in the world, the South African is the highest-ranked player in this week’s field at the HP Byron Nelson Championship, and explained during a press conference Tuesday that the anticipated birth will likely sideline him at Merion.
‘At the moment, the U.S. Open is going to be a miss for me because the baby is due then,’ he explained.
Oosthuizen went on to explain that should the baby be delivered the week prior to the U.S. Open, he would make the trip to Ardmore, Pa., but if delivered ‘during the U.S. Open, I won’t play.’
Coming off a T-19 finish at TPC Sawgrass, Oosthuizen is now making the second of four consecutive starts on the PGA Tour before a planned break to spend time with family. In addition to this week’s event at TPC Four Seasons, the former British Open champion is also expected to play next week at the Crowne Plaza Invitational, as well as The Memorial Tournament the following week.
