Khang, Coughlin drop Saturday fourball match to Europeans, losing unbeaten streaks

Megan Khang has been described by U.S. Solheim Cup captain Angela Stanford as the “battery” of the team. That’s part of the reason Stanford selected the 28-year-old for this year’s matches despite a less-than-stellar season.

But the battery lost some steam on Saturday afternoon.

Khang went out in the first fourball match of the day with Lauren Coughlin. The duo was paired against Maja Stark and Linn Grant.

It was a relatively even match throughout, with the lead trading between the U.S. and Europe, or tied, through 12 holes. The U.S. had an opportunity during that stretch where they were 1 up for seven straight holes, but they couldn’t put anymore distance between their competitors. Instead, the Europeans were able to go 2 up on the 13th and ended up winning, 2 and 1, on the 17th.

With Stark and Grant’s triumph, both Khang and Coughlin lost out on notable unbeaten streaks.

Khang was on the cusp of tying Paula Creamer’s record (10 matches) for the longest unbeaten streak in Solheim Cup history. Her nine-match streak with an 8-0-1 record coming into Saturday dated back to 2021.

While not a five-time Solheim Cupper like Khang, Coughlin was 5-0-2 through seven matches in 2024 and this week. Coughlin started Saturday with an incredible 6 and 5 foursomes win with Alison Lee over Charley Hull and Lottie Woad, but her streak was also snapped by Stark and Grant’s win.

While the U.S. is tied with Europe heading into Sunday’s singles matches, European captain Anna Nordqvist seems to have found her dominant duo in Stark and Grant. The pair are 3-0 at this year’s matches, beating the likes of Khang, Coughlin, Nelly Korda, Allisen Corpuz, Jennifer Kupcho and Rose Zhang.
