World No. 530 Ta Hee Lee finished 72nd and last with 19-over at Sunday’s WGC-Mexico Championship but he shook that off in round one of the Oman Open today, hoisting up a 5-under-par 34-33=67 to tie for second, just one back from leader Guido Migliozzi.

That’s an impressive bounceback and 67 is 13 shots fewer than his opening 80 at Chapultepec. The South Korean was steady on his front side with birdies at 3 and 6 before a much livelier back side which saw him par just two holes. Lee bogeyed the 10th but then went birdie-birdie-birdie from Nos. 12-14. He dropped another shot at 15 but added circles at 16 and 18 to complete an impressive debut lap of Al Mouj.

World No. 420 Tae Hee Lee is on Jeju Island, Korea, for this week’s CJ CUP and heads out in Round 1 at 9:00 am local time with Luke List and Wyndham Clark. UPDATE: Lee finished 76th (last) on 19-over 307 (74-77-77-79).

This is the 35-year-old’s third career PGA TOUR event. He debuted a T55 here last season on 1-under 287 (72-71-74-70), and finished T70 at the Genesis Open back in February on 6-over 290 (68-74-75-73). Lee is one of two players in the field this week selected from the Asian Tour. He’s won three times worldwide in 177 events, most recently on the Asian Tour back in May (Seoul) in a 3-hole sudden-death playoff. Lee ranks 4th this season on the Asian Tour’s Order of Merit, but has missed four of his last seven cuts since the win, including his last two.
