P Jon Ryan has an early “leg up” on incumbent starter B.J. Sander.
Ryan spent 2005 in the CFL and signed with the Packers in February. Sander has struggled since being taken in the third round during the Mike Sherman regime.

Seahawks P Jon Ryan (concussion) is no longer on the injury report for Week 16 against the Cardinals.
Ryan will resume his normal punting duties against the Cardinals after putting in a full practice on Friday. We’re guessing he won’t try any trick plays this time after getting blown up last week against the Rams.

Seahawks P Jon Ryan (concussion) was limited at Wednesday’s practice.
Ryan suffered a concussion last week against the Rams. The Seahawks haven’t signed a punter yet, so it looks like they expect Ryan to play Saturday against the Cardinals. Ryan ranks 23rd in average punt distance (44.4 yards) this season.

Seahawks P Jon Ryan was concussed in Thursday’s win over the Rams.
Finishing off a 33-yard run on a completely unnecessary fourth quarter fake punt, Ryan got blown to smithereens. He was completely dazed, and bleeding from the mouth. Ryan has nine days to get cleared for Week 16.

    Seahawks re-signed P Jon Ryan to a four-year, $10 million contract.
The deal includes a $2.4 million signing bonus. This is our first Ryan blurb in over six years. Ryan’s 37.9 net average was just 29th in the league last season. He won’t make it through his entire contract if he keeps up at that rate. Ryan turns 35 in November.

Packers signed free agent punter Ryan Dougherty as competition for Jon Ryan.
Dougherty was with the Packers last pre-season and matched Ryan’s production before being waived in late August. Ryan had a horrific late season game at Soldier Field, but his 37.6 net average was the best by a Packer since 1969.

Seahawks signed punter Jon Ryan to a two-year contract.
Ryan Plackemeier will be waived to make room. Ryan was cut loose by Green Bay in favor of Derrick Frost at the end of camp despite a solid 2007 season.

Packers released LB Abdul Hodge and P Jon Ryan.
Ryan had to see this after Derrick Frost’s signing. Ryan isn’t a bad punter and will likely get a look elsewhere, possibly in Denver. Hodge’s knee issues caught up with him. Desmond Bishop will back up Nick Barnett.
  • Packers signed P Derrick Frost, formerly of the Redskins.
It’s unclear what this means for Jon Ryan’s future, but the guess here is he’ll be cut. Frost, 27, averaged only 36.4 net yards per punt to Ryan’s 37.6 last year, so it isn’t an obvious upgrade. Ryan’s overall average was also better.

Seahawks agreed to terms with P Jon Ryan on a six-year, $9.1 million extension.
Canada’s Regina Leader-Post broke the major punting news. Ryan, a former punter for the Regina Rams and Winnipeg Blue Bombers, averaged 46.2 yards per punt in 2009. He was due to hit free agency this offseason.
