The team needed some roster spots and Smith was among those who lost theirs in the transaction. He allowed two runs in 1 2/3 innings of work for the Marlins this year.

Smith was up as the 29th man during Tuesday’s doubleheader versus the Mets but didn’t make an appearance. He’ll be back eventually.

He was the odd-man out to make room for Sixto Sanchez to make his big league debut on Saturday evening. Smith should get another opportunity with the Marlins before the end of the season.

The Marlins now have both Josh Smith pitchers in their system, which is fun for you and difficult for us. The left-hander returns to Miami after he was designated for assignment by the Reds to clear room on their 40-man roster just before Opening Day. There’s no fantasy appeal here.

The Reds needed to clear 40-man roster spots for Christian Colon and Matt Davidson. Smith was a waiver claim over the winter.

Smith went from the Indians to the Marlins in September via the waiver process and now he’s on the move again. The left-hander registered a 6.39 ERA over 14 appearances in the majors this season.

He will join the team on Monday against the Diamondbacks. The rookie made eight relief appearances for the Indians and registered a 5.40 ERA with 12 strikeouts in 8 1/3 innings.
