Padres signed LHP Luke Westphal to a minor league contract.
The 34-year-old hurler pitched in the Padres’ system from 2021-2022 and has been pitching in foreign and independent leagues since. He had been toeing the slab for the Toros de Tijuana in the Mexican League where he registered a 3.32 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and a 50/12 K/BB ratio over 38 innings in his eight starts. With all of the injuries that the Padres have had to shoulder in their rotation, adding another arm for organizational depth seems prudent.

Padres re-signed LHP Luke Westphal to a minor league contract.
Westphal struggled with his control, but also posted intriguing strikeout totals, as a versatile swingman at Triple-A El Paso last season, finishing with a 5.84 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 58/28 K/BB ratio across 49 1/3 innings (18 appearances, 10 starts). The 32-year-old southpaw will return as organizational relief depth for the 2022 season.
