Dolphins re-signed restricted free agent OT Lydon Murtha to a one-year, $1.927 million contract.
Murtha received a second-round tender. The Dolphins are high on Murtha’s prospects as a potential swing tackle behind LT Jake Long and a right tackle to be named later. A former Nebraska Cornhuster, Murtha likely would have been a starter at some point last season if a toe injury hadn’t cost him the entire year. Marc Colombo was a nightmare on the right side.
  • MIA Tackle
Free agent RG Vernon Carey is not expected back with the Dolphins in 2012.
The South Florida Sun-Sentinel hears that Carey’s value is “much higher elsewhere than in South Florida.” Declining RT Marc Colombo is also expected to be replaced. John Jerry, a 2010 third-rounder, will likely be thrust back into a starting role, and GM Jeff Ireland maintains a fondness for tackle project Lydon Murtha. New coach Joe Philbin will be rebuilding the O-Line, sending him back to his coaching roots.
  • FA Tackle #75
Dolphins second-round pick Jonathan Martin remains a work in progress.
With Jake Long locked in at left tackle, Martin is making the transition to the right side. Martin has only two weeks of practice with the team due to academic responsibilities, but remains the projected starter. If Martin struggles, Lydon Murtha would get a look.
  • FA Tackle #76
Lions agreed to terms with seventh-round OT Lydon Murtha on a multi-year contract.
The fastest offensive lineman at the Combine, Murtha missed time during minicamps with ongoing back problems. His size, strength and athleticism bode well for a future at right tackle, but his injury history suggests he’ll have a hard time staying on the field.
  • FA Tackle #76
Lions seventh-round pick Lydon Murtha has been unable to practice at minicamps because of a back injury.
Murtha, who ran faster than any offensive lineman at the Combine, has been dogged by back problems since his freshman season at Nebraska. He has ability, but many teams probably red flagged him before the draft.
  • FA Tackle #76
Lions waived rookie OT Lydon Murtha.
The seventh-round pick, Murtha, will likely join the practice squad unless he is claimed by another team via waivers.
  • FA Tackle #76
Dolphins signed OT Lydon Murtha off the Lions’ practice squad.
Murtha has intriguing size (6'7/315) and athleticism, but he’s already earned the “injury-prone” label.
  • FA Tackle #76
Dolphins placed OT Lydon Murtha (ankle) on season-ending injured reserve.
Murtha unfortunately turned his ankle on the last play of practice. An intriguing long-term project with size and athleticism, the injury-prone Murtha had not seen game action since being claimed off waivers from the Lions.
  • FA Wide Receiver
Dolphins WR Brian Hartline (hand) and RT Vernon Carey (knee) have both been ruled out for Week 14.
Neither player made the trip to New York. Hartline’s absence all but ensures that Darrelle Revis will shadow Brandon Marshall for the vast majority of Miami’s offensive snaps Sunday. Carey will miss his first game since 2005. Fill-in Lydon Murtha projects as a big downgrade at right tackle.
  • MIA Tackle
Dolphins placed RT Vernon Carey (knee) on injured reserve, ending his season.
After battling the knee injury for a few weeks, Carey’s consecutive games streak ended at 87 games in Week 14. Lydon Murtha filled in against the Jets, though rookie John Jerry has also seen time at tackle in practice. Carey is signed through 2014, but a second straight year with nagging knee soreness has to be a concern.
