Huff

Huff is suspended for Week 1 due to a substance-abuse violation, but he’ll be back Week 2 as safety depth and a body to cover kicks and punts.

Huff has failed to make an impact since joining the Titans as a fourth-round pick in 2014. He was mostly limited to a special teams role during his two years in Tennessee. The 24-year-old is facing a one-game suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

The third-year safety will sit out the Titans’ season opener against Minnesota. Huff logged 15 tackles last year while mostly contributing on special teams.

Huff was suspended for Week 1. The Jags claimed him off waivers just nine days ago. Evidently, he was only an insurance policy in case the Jags needed some DB depth after Sunday’s opener.

It’s very surprising, as Huff played just 33 snaps on defense in 11 games after being signed off the Jaguars’ practice squad. He’s not typically the kind of player who would get a $1.797 million tender. Perhaps the Ravens, who must love Huff on special teams, are hoping to work out a 2-3 year deal.

Huff was a deep reserve for the Ravens last season after being claimed off waivers from the Jaguars. He will try to carve out a role on special teams in Kansas City.

Both were given original-round tenders, but they are now unrestricted free agents. Considering he played just 33 snaps on defense in 11 games after being picked up off waivers from the Jaguars, it was surprising Huff was offered the tender in the first place. The moves create $3.4 million in cap space.

Huff was a restricted free agent not tendered by the Ravens. He signed with the Chiefs eight days into free agency. The No. 122 overall pick of the 2014 draft, Huff is a special teams type who has appeared in at least 11 games each of the past three seasons.

There was some buzz Huff could help out at nickel corner, but the 2014 fourth-round pick will back up Michael Griffin and Da’Norris Searcy. Huff recorded one interception, one sack and 18 tackles in 280 defensive snaps last season.

Huff is built slightly for a safety and lacks a starting-caliber corner’s skill set. We suspect he will max out as a special teamer in Tennessee.
