The Athletic’s Connor Hughes reports the Jets will not retain senior offensive assistant Matt Cavanaugh for the 2022 season.
He added that offensive assistant John Beck will be let go, though he is expected to continue working with Zach Wilson through his private quarterback coaching practice. Cavanaugh has nearly 20 years of experience as an offensive coordinator and position coach. Hughes outlined a too many cooks scenario where Robert Saleh and Mike LaFleur felt they needed to trim down their staff to be more effective. Quarterbacks coach Rob Calabrese will take on a larger role with Cavanaugh and Beck out of the picture. Hughes added that Calabrese would be next in line for offensive coordinator duties if LaFleur is eventually hired away.

  • Redskins demoted OC Matt Cavanaugh to senior offensive assistant.
33-year-old QBs coach Kevin O’Connell has been promoted to take 62-year-old Cavanaugh’s place. The Redskins have now stripped both their offensive and defensive coordinators of some/all responsibilities without actually firing them. It’s a uniquely-Washington approach to the coaching staff. Cavanaugh had been calling the shots since Sean McVay’s departure in 2017.
  • Mike Jones of the Washington Post reports the Redskins are in negotiations to promote QBs coach Matt Cavanaugh to offensive coordinator.
This has been the expected outcome since OC Sean McVay left to take a head-coaching job with the Rams last week. With Cavanaugh ascending to offensive coordinator, Kevin O’Connell is expected to take over as the Redskins’ QBs coach. O’Connell spent last year as an offensive assistant for the 49ers. Head coach Jay Gruden is expected to handle play-calling duties on offense next season.
  • Redskins promoted QBs coach Matt Cavanaugh to offensive coordinator.
This has been in the works for a couple days and always made the most sense to keep stability on offense after Sean McVay left for the Rams’ head-coaching gig. Cavanaugh has been coaching in the NFL since 1994. He hasn’t been an offensive coordinator in the league since 2004 with the Ravens. This will be his third season in D.C. Kevin O’Connell replaces him as QBs coach.
  • The Redskins are expected to promote QB coach Matt Cavanaugh to offensive coordinator.
Washington is staying in-house after losing Sean McVay to the Rams. Cavanaugh is one of the better position coaches in the league but hasn’t coordinated since 2004 in Baltimore. With Jay Gruden returning to playcalling, Cavanaugh will have more of a game-planner role.
  • Redskins hired Matt Cavanaugh as QBs coach.
Washington didn’t have a quarterbacks coach during Jay Gruden’s first season. Cavanaugh spent the last two years working with Jay Cutler on Marc Trestman’s staff, but has an extensive track record as both a position coach and coordinator. The Redskins had one of the worst passing attacks in the league last season with Robert Griffin III, Kirk Cousins, and Colt McCoy combining for just 18 touchdowns.
