Hassan batted .256/.377/.365 with seven homers in his first full season at Triple-A. He’s now protected from the Rule 5 Draft.

Hassan, who turns 25 in April, was added to the 40-man roster over the winter after batting .256/.377/.365 with seven homers and a .743 OPS last season with Triple-A Pawtucket. He figures to head back to Triple-A to begin 2013.

Hassan has been sidelined since the start of camp with a “stress reaction” in his left foot. The Red Sox are hoping he can return to game action sometime in mid-March. If he can make it through the spring healthy, Hassan should open 2013 at Triple-A Pawtucket.

Hassan, who turns 25 in April, is in the process of ramping up his rehab following a stress fracture in his left foot. He was added to the 40-man roster over the winter after batting .256/.377/.365 with seven homers and a .743 OPS last season with the PawSox.

Hassan broke the news himself on Twitter, saying that he’s re-enrolled at Duke in order to finish his degree. The 28-year-old was a pretty good prospect for the Red Sox a few years ago, but he really struggled at the Triple-A level in 2016 and finishes his career with just nine plate appearances in the majors (all in 2014).

Hassan was designated for assignment by the A’s on May 8 and passed through waivers unclaimed. He’s been designated for assignment three different times this year. Now he gets to pick his next organization.

The move opens a 40-man roster spot for veteran outfielder Cody Ross, who was released by the Diamondbacks on Saturday and officially signed by the A’s on Wednesday. Hassan, 27, has logged just nine career plate appearances at the major league level. He will likely make it through waivers unclaimed.

It’s been quite a ride for Hassan, who has bounced around to four different teams (not including and extra stop with the A’s) since the offseason. It’s possible he could be claimed off waivers again.

Hassan will head to extended spring training for now before being assigned to Triple-A Buffalo. The 27-year-old has batted .278/.381/.402 in his time at Triple-A this season.

Hassan gets the call even though he was hitting just .217/.318/.303 in his first 45 games this season. The 26-year-old will be making his major league debut when he gets into a game.
