Schultz, 33, held a 1.43 ERA and 32/14 K/BB ratio over 37 2/3 innings in the Pirates farm system last season. He hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2016.

Schultz is now on the 40-man roster. It’s quite an accomplishment considering that the 28-year-old was pitching in independent ball just two seasons ago, but he earned it after posting a 3.35 ERA and 75/36 K/BB ratio in 104 2/3 innings between Double- and Triple-A this year.

The Blue Jays were in desperate need of fresh arms in the bullpen after Friday’s marathon loss to the Indians, so Schultz (who worked 2 2/3 innings in that game) gets the boot. He should be back with the big league club later this summer.

Shultz has seen just 4 2/3 innings of major league work this season. He has allowed two runs on six hits in that space. The 30-year-old right-hander will serve as bullpen depth, but likely won’t see any pressure situations during this cup of coffee.

Schultz has recovered from offseason labrum surgery on his hip, but he’ll work his way back in the minors first. He’s posted a 12.91 ERA on his rehab assignment.

Schultz owns a 3.27 ERA and 7/2 K/BB ratio over 11 innings at the major league level this season. He’ll pitch in middle relief.

Schultz has been up and down all season, posting a respectable 3.00 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, and 7/2 K/BB ratio in 12 major league innings. He’ll get another shot soon.

Schultz has a 4.15 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in 13 innings this season out of the Toronto bullpen. He’ll probably be brought back when Buffalo wraps up its schedule.

Schultz has put up a 4.24 ERA and 14/3 K/BB ratio over 17 relief innings for Buffalo this season. He’ll be used in low-leverage situations.

Schultz has been shuttled back and forth between Triple-A and the big leagues several times this season, but could be up to stay now with rosters set to expand in September. The 30-year-old right-hander owns a 3.00 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 7/2 K/BB ratio across 12 big league innings this season.
