Minor league free agent Brad Knox pitched 6 1/3 hitless innings Monday as Aragua beat Licey to open up Caribbean Series play.
The Venezuelan Tigres beat the Dominican Tigres in the start of the round-robin tournament. Knox had just walked his fifth hitter, but he was still at a mere 88 pitches when the Tigres opted to replace him with Yohan Pino in the top of the seventh. Pino immediately gave up a game-tying two-run homer to the first batter he faced, costing Knox a chance at a victory. Venezuela went on to win 3-2 after Luis Maza broke a tie in the top of the ninth inning with his fourth hit. Knox, who had been in the A’s system since 2002, became a free agent after going 7-4 with a 5.33 ERA for Triple-A Sacramento last season. We’re guessing he won’t be one for much longer.
