The 25-year-old will begin the season at Double-A Montgomery and will function as organizational depth for the Rays. He appeared in just one Cactus League game with the Diamondbacks, allowing two runs on four hits in his lone inning of work.

The 28-year-old right-hander spent the last two seasons in Japan with only middling success. He’s nothing more than minor league depth for the Diamondbacks.

Another roster move might be in the works, because Arizona is now down to 39 men on the 40-man roster. Hagens was in the majors for three days earlier this month (he allowed one run in 2 2/3 innings). He’s posted a 3.95 ERA across 120-plus innings on the farm this year, but it’s not hard to see why another team didn’t want to take a chance on a hurler that the pitching-starved Snakes ruled expandable.

Hagens will serve as long-relief depth for Arizona. He was sporting a 4.12 ERA, 1.44 WHIP, and 62/54 K/BB ratio through 115 2/3 innings this season at Triple-A.
