Giants signed C Brett Cumberland to a minor league contract.
Cumberland was traded to the Orioles back in 2018 from the Braves and has yet to reach the majors. The 27-year-old backstop became a minor league free agent this offseason after hitting .230/.346/.336 with four homers and one steal in 179 plate appearances last year between three levels in Baltimore’s system. He’ll likely slot in as organizational catching depth for the Giants.

  • BAL Starting Pitcher #30
Orioles reassigned RHP Grayson Rodriguez, C Brett Cumberland, RHP Marcos Diplán, INF Patrick Dorrian, C Maverick Handley, OF Robert Neustrom, RHP Cody Sedlock, and LHP Nick Vespi to minor league camp.
The massive batch of cuts leaves the Orioles at 48 players left in major-league camp. Rodriguez is one of the top pitching prospects in baseball and should have a realistic shot at making the major leagues later this season.

  • Braves C prospect Brett Cumberland delivered a career-high six RBI Tuesday in a win for Rookie-level Danville.
He homered and doubled twice as part of a three-hit night. Cumberland now has five multi-hit games in his last eight contests. That’s raised his average from .167 to .232. The 21-year-old is still quite raw, though he’s been among the better run producers in the Appalachian League this season with 22 RBI in 82 at-bats. The Braves selected Cumberland with the 76th overall pick in this year’s draft following a successful college career at Cal-Berkeley.
  • Orioles acquired C Brett Cumberland, LHP Bruce Zimmerman and international signing slots from the Braves in exchange for Kevin Gausman and Darren O’Day.
Gausman is the top prospect in the deal, a 23-year-old backstop that was the 76th pick of the 76th pick of the 2016 draft out of Cal. There’s no standout tool here, but Cumberland has an excellent approach at the plate, and he’s just good enough defensively behind the plate to stay at catcher. He profiles more as a backup, but he might be good enough to become a below-average regular.
